Mate r i als and me tho ds Patientsrequiringtoothextractionandsubsequentimplantrestorationwere considered eligible for the study. Cortico-cancellous porcine bone and a re- sorbablecollagenmembranewereusedtograftfreshextractionsockets, and sutures were used to stabilize the membrane. Four months after the ridge preservationprocedure,allofthesiteswerere-entered,bonecoreswerehar- vested for histological and analysis, and implants were placed. The width of keratinized gingiva, thethickness ofthe buccal bonewall, andthe horizontal andverticalbonedimensionalvariationweremeasuredatbaselineandafter fourmonths. Re su lts Thirty-seven patients were enrolled in the study. After four months, the amount of vertical bone loss was 0.2± 0.7  mm for mesial sites, 1.1± 0.9 mmforbuccalsites,0.2± 0.8 mmfordistalsitesand0.9± 0.9 mm forpalatal/lingualsites.Thethicknessofthebuccalbonewallwasfoundto becorrelatedtothehorizontalboneloss.Thekeratinizedgingivashoweda meanincreaseintheocclusaldirectionof1.8±0.7 mm.Newlyformedbone couldbeobservedaroundthegraftingmaterialinthehistologicalanalysis, eventhoughresidualgraftedparticleswerestillpresent. Co nclu si o n In this study, we observed that the flapless ridge preservation procedure was effective in maintaining an adequate bone architecture, which allows implantplacement;moreover,thisprocedureimprovedtheamountofker- atinized tissue.
