Die Bemühun- gen der Sunstar-Stiftung erfahren inter- nationale Anerkennung für ihre positi- ven Auswirkungen in der Gesellschaft. Seit 2007 zeichnet die Sunstar- Stiftung bei den World Dental Hygie- nist Awards Dentalhygieniker aus, die einen wichtigen Beitrag zur zahnmedi- zinischen Forschung, zum Leben der Patienten und zur Gesellschaft geleis- tet haben. Die World Dental Hygienist Awards werden alle drei Jahre an eine Einzelperson oder eine Personen- gruppe vergeben, die von einem unab- hängigen Komitee ausgewählt wurde. Sunstar World Dental Hygienist Awards 2016 Wir freuen uns, die Gewinner der 4. Sunstar World Dental Hygienist Awards bekannt zu geben. Juliet Dang, PhD, MS, RDH University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA Das Hauptziel ihrer Studie war die Entdeckung von Humanen Papilloma- viren (HPVs) mithilfe von Sequenzie- rungstechnologie der nächsten Gene- ration an Speichelproben zur Bestim- mung der Prävalenz neuartiger HPVs in Gewebeproben. Hierdurch soll ein besseres Verständnis von Krebsarten, die in Verbindung mit HPVs stehen, er- zielt werden. Durch Sequenzierung der nächsten Generation konnten in der Studie HPVs in Speichelproben identi- fiziert werden. Diese sogenannte Sanger-Sequenzierung ermöglichte die Identifizierung und Charakterisierung von drei verschiedenen neuartigen HPVs in Speichelproben. Rebecca Barry, RDH, PhD University of Mississippi Medical Center, USA Ziel ihrer Studie war die Untersu- chung der Auswirkungen von Arbeits- haltungen auf die Entwicklung von Er- krankungen des Bewegungsapparats und die daraus entstehende Beein- trächtigung im Arbeitsalltag der Den- talhygieniker in Mississippi. Zur Ana- lyse von Arbeitsbedingungen in den Praxen und Arbeitsgewohnheiten wurden deskriptive Statistiken heran- gezogen. Die Daten deuteten darauf hin, dass ein hoher Prozentsatz an Dentalhygienikern unabhängig von der Arbeitshaltung nach einiger Zeit an Erkrankungen des Bewegungsap- parats leidet. Die Daten zeigen jedoch auch, dass die Erkrankungen des Be- wegungsapparats zwar die Lebens- qualität der Betroffenen beeinträchti- gen, aber anscheinend keine negati- ven Auswirkungen auf die zahnmedi- zinische Versorgung in Mississippi haben. Sandy Kemper, RDH, BS Smiles Forever Foundation, Cochabamba, Bolivien Smiles Forever ist eine Non-Pro- fit-Stiftung in Bolivien, die zahnmedi- zinische Schulungsprogramme durch- führt, um dem Mangel an zahnmedi- zinischem Personal in Bolivien entge- genzuwirken. Das Hauptziel besteht darin, die zahnmedizinische Versor- gung von einkommensschwachen Bolivianern zu verbessern, indem Frauen aus diesen Familien zu Den- talhygienikerinnen ausgebildet wer- den. Im Rahmen dieses Programms erhielten 37 Frauen der indigenen Bevölkerung eine allgemeine und fachbezogene Ausbildung und an- schliessend eine entsprechende Arbeitsstelle. Diese Frauen haben wiederum dazu beigetragen, die Zahngesundheit von über 20’000 Kindern und jungen Erwachsenen aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen in der Cochabamba-Region in Bolivien zu verbessern. Die Projekte der Gewinner wer- den beim International Symposium of Dental Hygiene 2016 in Basel als Teil des Hauptprogramms vorgestellt (24. Juni 2016, 9–10.30 Uhr im Haupt- plenarsaal). Juliet Dang, PhD, MS, RDH University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA The main objective of this study was to discover Human Papillomavi- ruses (HPVs) using Next Generation Sequencing technology in oral rinse samples determining the prevalence of novel HPVs is tissue samples. The procedures were completed to gain a better understanding of HPV-associ- ated cancers. Through NGS the study was able to identify HPVs in oral rinse samples. With Sanger sequencing the study identified and characterized three different novel HPVs in oral rinse samples. Rebecca Barry, RDH, PhD University of Mississippi Medical Center, USA The purpose of this study was to assess impact of operator position on development of musculoskeletal dis- orders (MSDs) and workforce issues among practicing dental hygienists in Mississippi. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze practice history and work habits. The data suggested that regardless of operator position used, given enough time, a large per- centage of dental hygienists are going to develop MSDs. However, data also suggested that the presence of MSDs may impact quality of life and does not appear to negatively impact the dental hygiene workforce in Missis- sippi. Sandy Kemper, RDH, BS Smiles Forever Foundation, Cochabamba, Bolivia Smiles Forever is a non-profit foundation in Bolivia, designed and developed to address training pro- gram and workforce shortages re- lated to oral health in Bolivia. The overall objective is to improve the oral health of low-income Bolivians through training low-income women to become dental hygienists. The pro- gram has provided education, an employable skillset, and a career to 37 poor indigenous women. These women have, in turn, contributed to improving the oral health status of more than 20,000 impoverished children and young adults in the Cochabamba region of Bolivia. The winning projects will be pre- sented at the International Sympo- sium of Dental Hygiene 2016 in Basel as part of the main program (24 June 2016, 9:00 to 10:30, Main Plenary room).
