Location The Lake Como Institute is located in the town of Como, famous for its silk manufacturers. Within what remains of its 12th-century walls is a charming historical center. The town is set on the shores of Lake Como, situated in a basin surround- ed by wooded mountains and said to be the most beautiful of the Italian lakes. There is plen- ty to see while strolling around, including stunning villas, gardens, and sites of his- torical and cultural significance. www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/the-italian- lakes/como How to get there From Milano Malpensa Airport, located about one hour away by car, you can take the Malpensa Express train to Como. www.malpensaexpress.it From Lugano Airport in Switzerland, locat- ed about 20 minutes away by car, you can take a shuttle bus to Lugano, and then a train from Lugano station to Como S. Giovanni station (trains depart hourly). What to see and do Como is a very small old town and the best way to get to know it is by exploring its nar- row passages, old streets, quaint markets and piazzas, stopping to enjoy a cappuccino on the terrace of one of its many cafes. The remarkable 11th-century Roman- esque Basilica di Sant’Abbondio has a beau- tiful fresco series inside the apse and a uni- versity occupies what was once the cloister. Lake Como’s shores feature a varied landscape of fields, forests, imposing rocks, charming villages facing the lake and magnificent mansions with beautiful gar- dens, particularly from Cernobbio to Gra- vedona and Bellagio. The following include only some of the innumerable sights: The middle of Lake Como, where its three branches come together, offers a spectacular view of the whole promon tory of Bellagio, of the northern Grigna moun- tains overlooking Valsassina, and of the upper basin against the backdrop of the Alps if the skies are clear. It has the mildest climate and can be reached by boat. www.taxiboat.it Besides the glorious views of the Lecco branch of the lake, which turns southward, there are natural springs, like Fiumelatte, described by Leonardo da Vinci, and the impressive Orrido di Bellano (gorge), sit- uated not far from the Renaissance Villa Monastero at Varenna.
