Flossy Brush: Toothbrush and flossing Indian walnut fruit beneficial aid in one in preventing periodontitis news “Flossy Brush -s not just another toothbrush. It -s far more effect-ve at re- mov-ng plaque and s-m- ple and conven-ent to use,” sa-d Dr Zoltan Rusznak, CEO of Flossy Brush. “Our a-m -s to sell th-s w-dely -n the US market, and as we grow, expand -nto European and Japanese markets. R-ght now, we are look- -ng for -nvestors who have an -nterest -n help-ng launch the product -nto the next phase.” Investors who want to learn more about the company and the product may v-s-t the ded-cated page on the Fundable crowdfund-ng webs-te for more -nformat-on. The brush can be ordered at www. flossybrush.com for US$ 7.99, w-th ten yards of floss -ncluded -n the package. 7  By comb-n-ng a toothbrush and an -ntegrated floss holder -nto one conven-ent product, the manufacturer of the new Flossy Brush a-ms to s-mpl-fy da-ly oral hyg-ene. n After a development phase of two years, a US start-up company has launched Flossy Brush, a new 2--n-1 dental clean-ng tool that comb-nes a manual toothbrush on one end and a floss-ng a-d on the other. Ow-ng to -ts double funct-onal-ty, the manufacturer cla-ms that -t removes s-gn-ficantly more plaque than a regular manual brush does. It -s currently the only prod- uct of -ts k-nd ava-lable on the market. The Flossy Brush features a long, curved handle that enables the user to reach the poster-or teeth w-th ease. The -ntegrated floss holder of- fers s-mple and qu-ck placement and replacement of any k-nd of floss on the market. The brush -s ava-lable -n d-fferent colours and two br-stle types: ultra-soft br-stles (tapered 0.01 t-p) or Tynex soft, rounded br-stles. Researchers have now assessed the plant’s use -n the prevent-on of per-odont-t-s. n Ethanol extracts of the fru-t of the Terminalia chebula tree, commonly known as Ind-an walnut, may be an effect-ve means to prevent oral -n- flammat-on and bone resorpt-on, new find-ngs of a South Korean study have suggested. T. chebula -s a plant found throughout Southeast As-a. The prop- ert-es of var-ous extracts of -ts fru-t have been w-dely stud-ed and -nclude ant-ox-dant, ant-bacter-al, ant-fungal and ant-v-ral effects. Consequently, T. chebula -s one of the most common- ly used plants -n trad-t-onal med-- c-nes on the Ind-an subcont-nent. In the study, the researchers -nves- t-gated the effect of an ethanol extract of T. chebula -n the treatment and pre- vent-on of per-odontal d-sease. The an- t-bacter-al effect was analysed us-ng the d-sc d-ffus-on method, and the an- t---nflammatory effect was determ-ned by molecular b-olog-cal analys-s of cul- tured cells med-ated by bacter-a asso- c-ated w-th dental plaque format-on. In add-t-on, the prevent-on of osteoclast-c bone resorpt-on by the plant extract was explored us-ng osteoclast forma- t-on and p-t format-on assays. The find-ngs showed that the plant extract suppressed the growth of harmful oral bacter-a and reduced the -nduct-on of -nflammatory cyto- k-nes and proteases wh-le not show- -ng cytotox-c effects. Moreover, -t -nh-b-ted osteoclast format-on -n os- teoclast precursors, thereby contr-b- ut-ng to the prevent-on of bone re- sorpt-on, the researchers found. In l-ght of the find-ngs, ethanol extracts of T. chebula may be an ef- fect-ve botan-cal chemoprevent-ve agent that can modulate bacter-a--n- duced -nflammatory factors -nvolved -n g-ng-v-t-s and per-odont-t-s, the re- searchers concluded. However, fur- ther stud-es are needed to -solate and -dent-fy the benefic-al chem-cal con- st-tuents -n the extract that could be explo-ted for pharmaceut-cal use, such as -n mouthwash and other oral hyg-ene products. The study, t-tled “Use of ethanol extracts of Terminalia chebula to pre- vent per-odontal d-sease -nduced by dental plaque bacter-a”, was pub- l-shed on 16 February -n the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal. 7 Kiwi researcher aims to regrow teeth n The ab-l-ty to grow new teeth has long been a p-pe dream -n dent-stry. Recent breakthroughs, however, have shown that -t -s poss-ble to pro- mote regenerat-on of dental t-ssue w-th the a-m of reduc-ng the use of fill-ng mater-al and help-ng teeth to self-repa-r. Dr Azam Al- from the Un-- vers-ty of Otago -n New Zealand has now launched a research project that seeks to develop a b-omater-als sys- tem that would allow regrowth of en- t-re teeth. Al-’s “No dr-ll, no fill” project was -n-t-ally -ntended to create a su-table b-ocompat-ble alternat-ve to trad-t-onal fill-ng mater-als used to treat dental car-es. The study’s parameters soon expanded to pro- duc-ng new dental t-ssue as the po- tent-al of the mater-als to be used became apparent dur-ng prel-m-- nary test-ng. In recogn-t-on of the-r -nnova- t-on, Al- and h-s team have been awarded an explorer grant of A$150,000 (US$113,171) from the Health Research Counc-l of New Zea- land. Th-s grant -s -ntended to pro- v-de financ-al support for the study for up to 24 months. “Develop-ng a techn-que to re- grow teeth, for example, -s an extraor- d-nary concept and offers huge po- tent-al for people suffer-ng dental health problems,” sa-d Health M-n-s- ter Dr Jonathan Coleman upon award-ng the grant to Al-. 7 © sutham/Shutterstock.com
