Digital radiography that seems designed for pediatric practices.... Continued from page 02 4) Easy image manipulation. Brightness and contrast can easily be manipulated, and areas of the film can be magnified for better viewing and diagnosis. 5) Same placement technique as film. ScanX digital sensors are placed in the patient’s mouth just as X-ray films are. 6) Easy software integration. ScanX software integrates easily with most imaging software. 7) Less radiation. Wth ScanX, the X-ray exposure can typically be 80-to-85 percent less than that required for film, which is something your patients’ parents will appreciate. 8) Quick image review and saving. When you view the scanned image, within seconds you can determine if you’ve captured the desired image. With a couple of keystrokes, you can then save the image into the patient’s electronic chart. 9) Digital storage and transmission. Electronic charts eliminate the need to store X-rays in bulky manila files and space-hogging file cabinets and allow instantaneous transmission through email. 10) No chemicals. With ScanX you don’t have to deal with and pay for costly film packs and messy chemicals, or deal with the hassle of chemical disposal. 11) Affordability. ScanX sensors are a fraction of the price of hard sensors and can be reused hundreds of times. There’s also no need for costly insurance or annual maintenance. 12) Chairside compatibility. The compact size of the ScanX Swift processor makes it perfect for chairside use or for placement just about anywhere in the office. If I had to pick the most important advantage of using the ScanX Swift, it’s the fact that its sensors can be used with 100 percent of the children who can tolerate regular film X-rays. ScanX sensors are 30 times thinner than wired sensors, so they’ll fit even the smallest mouth. If you ask my staff, however, their favorite advantage of the ScanX Swift would probably be the fact that the images are scanned and available so quickly, so if a retake is needed, they know it almost immediately. If you explore digital radiography with flexible wireless sensors, I’m confident that you too will soon be wondering how you ever got along without it. Continued from page 02 Undeniably collecting clean and reliable data and analysing it in a consistent way is part of 21st century management. Data is the fundamental ingredient in decision making, figuring out where to focus your resources, create your targeted marketing approach. Taking control of your data The data on its own has no meaning, it can not provide the full picture, it does not take into account the values you stand for and the culture you trying to create in your dental business or your patients’ personal feelings they feel about your clinic. Practice data alone can not be used to guide the success of the clinic. In order to fully utilize the facts and figures they need to be put into context. Hours spent collecting data is wasted if the bigger picture not taken into consideration. The clinic`s short and long term goals needs to be agreed upon and once you are on your journey the collected data can demonstrate if you are on the right track to achieve your goals. The numbers provide an effective tool to help manage and control the growth and development of your dental business but do not set the strategy you need to adopt. Constantly analyse your data – look at how your clinic is performing. The right data at the right time will aid your decision making process regarding your finances, marketing, operations of your clinic – but be ensure that you control your data and put it into context. Always understand the “whys” to know the way forward to the “hows”. Partnering to build a world of healthy, beautiful smiles.... Govt urged to ban sale of tobacco products.... Continued from page 10 Underscoring the need for launching a sustainable awareness campaign against tobacco chewing and smoking, Dr Mubeen said:" According to teachings of Islam any substance that harms the mind or body is a sin." He urged the government, health organizations and electronic and print media to play their due role to inform people about the hazards of tobacco products. He demanded of Sindh governor and chief minister to impose a ban on sale and purchase of tobacco products in province. New technology improves treatment and prevention of bacterial infection.... Continued from page 10 £25,000 (approx. €35,300) Materials Science Venture Prize awarded by the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers. “Pertinax can greatly extend the active lifetime of chlorhexidine, enabling it to provide reliable protection against infection for very much longer than was previously possible. This opens up a range of new potential applications, as well as the opportunity to make existing products more effective,” said Barbour, senior lecturer in biomaterials in the school. “Our initial focus will be in the dental market,” explained Barbour. “Research shows there is a clear need for long-acting antimicrobial products used in fillings and cements for crowns, bridges and orthodontic braces which will treat and prevent persistent bacterial infections over a much longer time frame than is currently possible.” Owing to its novel formulation, Pertinax has an unusually low solubility, which can provide a continuous slow release over a controlled period. “This is a significant development which should help prevent some hard to treat infections affecting millions of people,” said Prof. Bill Bonfield, chairman of the Armourers and Brasiers Venture Prize judging panel. “Our prize looks to encourage scientific entrepreneurship in the UK and provide funding, which is often difficult to source, to help bring new developments like this to market.” Research shows a trend towards “gentler” but still effective oral care products.... Continued from page 10 Tooth sensitivity is also very common. It can come and go over time. Our research found¹ that people also wanted to avoid having potential problems with sensitivity and are eager to use products that are gentler to their teeth. Teeth & gum sensitivity can also be caused by heavy/continuous intake of acidic food/drinks, increased age and can also be a side effect from use of strong/harsh whitening products. Dentists recommend that you brush with a soft toothbrush. Some people think that a soft toothbrush is not as effective as a harder one but this is not true. Actually the opposite, soft toothbrushes are gentler to your teeth enamel and gums. PMDC to verify doctors’foreign degrees.... Continued from page 10 from where the country's doctors have obtained their medical degrees, the officials confided. The sources said that the PMDC took the decision after Axact's alleged fake degree scandal came to light. The officials did not rule out the possibilities that some of the doctors might have acquired such degrees from `fake' foreign universities. Pointing out that more than 100,000 doctors are registered with the PMDC, sources said that process of verifying degrees of foreign qualified doctors will be a time consuming exercise.
