Since its national launch in 2003, GKAS volunteers have provided free oral health education and services to more than 7 million underserved children in the United States. In 2023, nearly 1,200 GKAS events are scheduled to take place through- out the United States, and it is esti- mated that approximately 300,000 underserved children will receive free oral health education, screenings and preventive and restorative ser- vices, such as cleanings and fillings. These services will be provided by approximately 30,000 dentists and dental team members who volunteer at local GKAS events, using essential oral health care products donated by national sponsor, Colgate-Palmolive, ciation and thanks to all who have been a part of the program, some from the very first day. 6 exhibitors Chicago Midwinter Meeting — February 23, 2023 Help keep mercury out of wastewater By Dove Dental Products Staff n Dental amalgams have been a con- cern for many years because of the mercury content and fear that mer- cury would enter our water systems from dental clinics. High volume evacuation (HVE) valves are used in amalgam proce- dures both in implanting and extract- ing amalgams. These HVE valves and their disposable tips capture and suck amalgams from the patient’s mouth, down the vacuum lines and ulti- mately into the wastewater system. The solution to capturing these amalgams for the last 20 years was to place an amalgam separator at the collection point for all the vacuum lines coming from all the dental oper- atories in a dental clinic just before exiting into the public wastewater stream. This was the basis for many states requiring dentists to insert amalgam separators in their clinics to minimize the mercury contaminat- ing our water systems. late addition, approached the issue from what is Capt-all, a AD Here in Chicago To learn more about Capt-all, stop by the Dove Dental Products booth, No. 3829. through the amalgam separator into the wastewater system. In measuring the mercury content leaving both amalgam separator and Capt-all clinics, one study measured 31.86 mg/liter entering the wastewa- ter system from the amalgam separa- tor clinic while the Capt-all mercury content in the wastewater met con- sumer drinking standards, i.e. less than 0.0020 mg/liter. Capt-all is an example of why the EPA added the equivalent capture device that brings new technology to prevent mercury from entering our wastewater systems. Once the procedure is complete, the Capt-all tip is removed from the HVE valve and deposited into a pro- vided recycle container. This is in contrast to the amalgam separator clinic where amalgams are sucked down the vacuum line with 70 percent captured in the chairside trap (according to EPA studies) and the remaining 30 percent finally ending up in the amalgam separator. In addition, and more importantly, as mercury sits in the chairside trap, pump filter and amalgam separa- tor sometimes for months, some of the mercury will dissolve and leach
