INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DENTAL STUDENTS No. 1, 2017

NOVEMBER2017 How could it affect the quality of our dental and medical practice? Malcolm X once said: "Human rights are something you're born with. Human rights are your God-given rights. Human rights are the rights that are recognized by all nations on this earth." They should not be something you demand or fight to have. It's the essence of being a human in this world. the lion's takes Without underestimating any of the other rights, Freedom of speech probably share nowadays, and when we think of what freedom of speech means to us as students or as dental students in specific, a lot of things come up in mind whether negative or positive. So, for this article we decided to make a comparison between how dental students feel about this right versus how it has been used negatively. So, firstly, we asked students themselves this question: " If you had free speech rights to its fullest, what would change regarding your education process? And what is impeding you from speaking out?"The answer that stood out was "Fear" and I quote: "Sometimes I need to ask something but the fear of the doctor saying in a very bad temper <>– saying in a very bad temper that this information was already taught in a previous lecture and I should already know it) and the fear of being embarrassed infront of my colleagues would stop me from asking any questions." Another kind of fear is the professor taking things personally, so the fear of being punished if you corrected a teacher or even commented on a teaching process, haunts you since 7 that lecturer can control whether you fail or pass their subject. So, we keep silent and pass, rather than express and fail. At a higher level, criticizing the school's policy or expressing what's going on wrong might get you in a lot of trouble. So, to have the courage and express what you want to say freely, it sometimes is a two-edged sword. You might win, or it might hit you back! If we start adjusting the education process and facility truly to what perfectly suits the student, the quality of education will only change for the better. Designing an environment for students where they feel that their voices are heard, that the system really appreciates the words opinions and the criticism of its incredible minds, in order to improve, will make them more appealing and less avoiding, more productive and innovative. Thus, they would want to come out on their own rather than feeling forced to do so! The educational atmosphere will have positive vibes and students will definitely be less depressed. This is an important point, since the amount of work and pressure laid upon a dental student, especially in their last years is immense and might drive them crazy! Students will make an effort to think of ways to improve the educational and clinical facility to stand out among other institutes. They will develop a sense of belonging to their college and it will be revived and energized. for An institute that cares its students will graduate amazing, loyal, professional & caring dentists. While another, that doesn't, will send out emotionless robotic dentists out to this world!
