INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DENTAL STUDENTS No. 1, 2017

NOVEMBER2017 FROM SHARJAH WITH AWE 5th International Students’ Dental Conference February 12th and 13th 2017 were witness to the annual return of one of Sharjah’s long-awaited dental events: The International Students’ Dental Conference (ISDC), back for the 5th year in a row. A seldom undertaken endeavor–not surprisingly–the ISDC is an entirely student-run event held every year in the emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates by the University of Sharjah Dental Students Association (USDSA). Organized with the help of its many members, the ISDC brings together young minds to share knowledge, discuss the latest findings in the dental domain, and spark enduring friendships. From pre- and post- conference social programs like masquerade parties, museum visits, yacht rides, and desert safaris to conference events such as symposiums, poster presentations, clinical competitions, debates, and workshops, the 5th ISDC was jampacked with highlights. direct composite build-ups, while Dr. Mohammad Adel wowed with veneers, Dr. Kausar Fakhruddin managed emergencies, Dr. Basheer Salman depigmented gums with laser therapy, and Professor Georg Zafiropoulos explored implant stability after placement of regenerative bone, among others. All in all, the 5th ISDC was a smashing success and a grand upgrade from the previous years. Hiba Jamal Aldin, fourth year dental student at the University of Sharjah and Immediate Past President of the USDSA, under whose reign the 5th ISDC came to life brought the conference to a close with the following words, “I’d like to think of the 5th ISDC as a mosaic, where hundreds of students, doctors, and nurses came together and fulfilled our vision of having a year of innovation!” And what a mosaic that was. See you next year! To honor this year’s theme of ‘Exploring the Innovations that Shape the Dentistry of Tomorrow’, fresh and fascinating issues were raised on an eclectic range of topics including salivary resistin and its potential as a biomarker of type 2 diabetes, nano bubble water and its application in RCT, dentist’s nail length and its effect on the integrity of examination gloves, adipose- derived stem cells for regenerating periodontium, and many more. About 50 presenters comprised of dental students and dentists from 20 different countries took the spotlight to impress the judges and over 700 attendees. Not only that, but alongside the presentations 8 workshops were held on the 2 conference days allowing hands-on training for current and future dentists to better acquaint them with the hot topics of dentistry: Dr. Hatem El-Damanhoury dropped jaws with his tips and tricks on anterior By Arghavan Navadeh. 6
