Implant community gathers in Madrid for EAO 2017 news (cid:132) After the FDI World Dental Con- gress in August, the Feria de Madrid fairgrounds will open its doors again today for dental professionals from around the world. From 5 to 7 Octo- ber, thousands will be able to learn everything there is to know about dental implantology and oral rehabil- itation at the 26th annual congress of the European Association for Osseo- integration (EAO). Organised in partnership with the Spanish society of prosthodontic and aesthetic dentistry (Sociedad Es- pañola de Prótesis Estomatológica y Estética), an association with a mem- bership of 4,500, the conference is poised to attract thousands of special- ists from all over the globe to Madrid. Spanning three days, the meeting will offer a number of high-class clin- ical lectures, hands-on sessions and industry symposia under the theme of “Twenty-five years of implant den- tistry. What have we learned?”. Ac- cording to the organisers, it will fur- thermore provide interactive oppor- tunities for audience involvement, such as surgical video sessions. Overall, more than 50 clinical ex- perts from all over the world will be speaking at this year’s event. Among them are prominent figures in den- tistry, such as Prof. Mariano Sanz from Spain, Dr Christian Coachman from Brazil and Dr Christoph Hämmerle from Switzerland. In the guest country session, clinicians from Latin America will be presenting their research to a professional audience for the first time. Furthermore, a record number of 139 manufacturers and dealers (as of 21 September), including inter- national heavyweights like Nobel Biocare, Straumann and Dentsply Sirona, have registered for the accom- panying trade exhibition, which will showcase the latest innovations. At- tendees will also be able to learn about the new products and clinical solutions in detail at industry sympo- sia that will run concurrently with the main programme. Founded in 1991 by leading den- tists interested in osseointegration, the EAO is now a worldwide author- ity in the fields of reconstructive sur- gery and prosthetic rehabilitation. In addition to its large annual event, the association holds master clinical courses throughout the year. It fur- thermore and non-members the opportunity to ob- tain a postgraduate diploma in im- plant dentistry. offers members Information about the 2017 con- gress and programme is available at the congress website and through the EAO SEPES 2017 mobile app, which can be downloaded from the iTunes Store and Google Play. The latest news from the show floor, interviews with opinion leaders, and impres- sions will be available at www.dental- tribune.com. (cid:26) (cid:4) 1 Definitive teeth in a day* Dental implant patients are in- creasingly requesting immediate res- torations and reduced treatment The Trefoil system, combining a pre-manufactured titanium bar, three implants, a simplified restorative workflow, acrylic prosthesis and min- imised restorative componentry, ena- the day of surgery* using a prefabri- cated bar and wrap-around acrylic technique for the prosthesis saves substantial time for the restorative clinician, the laboratory and ulti- mately the patient. First pre- manufactured bar with a passive fit Before the Trefoil sys- tem, prefabricated bars could be cost-efficient, but none could enable the passive fit that is so crucial to long-term treat- ment success. In chal- lenging this limitation, Nobel Biocare en gineers developed the first pre- manufactured bar with a passive fit, enabled by a unique fixation mecha- nism with self-adjusting joints. This mechanism provides passive fit by compensating for hori- zontal, vertical and angu- lar deviations from the ideal placement of the three implants. Accurate drilling with standardised drill guides enables precise parallel im- plant positioning and placement for passive fit. Proven implant design with conical connection A special component of the Trefoil system is the Trefoil Implant. It combines the proven parallel-wall Fig. 3 (cid:24)Fig. 3: The Trefoil system, specially designed to work on three implants and enabling definitive teeth on the day of surgery,* reduces time and cost in comparison with other fixed implant solutions. * Depending on clinical preference and close cooperation with the laboratory time. The TiUnite surface is proven to maintain implant stability during the critical healing phase through rapid bone forma- tion,7–9 and it promotes long-term suc- cess. Treatment success Results from an ongoing five-year multicentre study across four conti- nents are already being reported for implant and prosthetic survival rates.6 This important study has been expanded to include 110 patients at the request of clinicians, to meet the needs of their patients. Treating a whole new patient population with a fixed solution The decline in edentulism has been predicted to slow and to be par- tially offset by a growing and ageing population.10 High-quality and cost-ef- ficient solutions are crucial for serv- ing the needs of edentulous patients and patients with a failing dentition. In essence, the Trefoil system em- bodies the Nobel Biocare mission to treat more patients better. With this improved efficiency comes the oppor- tunity to continue with the vision of Per-Ingvar Brånemark and bring the benefits of osseointegration to a whole new patient population.
