Yankee Dental Congress ‘Raising the Bar’ Your chance to enjoy Boston and time with fellow dental professionals comes Jan. 24–28, with the 2018 Yankee Den- tal Congress at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The congress is sponsored by the Massachusetts Dental Society in cooperation with the dental associations of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Organizers describe the event as “New England’s largest meeting for profession- als seeking the highest quality dental continuing education, as well as dental products, services and resources.” Attracting approximately 27,000 den- tal professionals from across the U.S., the congress is the fifth largest dental meet- ing in the country, according to meeting organizers. Held in Boston every January, the meeting includes a three-day exhibit hall that features more than 450 exhibi- tors demonstrating innovative dental technology solutions. A wide range of education pavillions and C.E. opportuni- ties also cover the exhibit floor. With a 2018 theme of “Raising The Bar,” the meeting features more than 300 C.E. courses taught by industry experts cov- ering a wide variety of topics touching needs and interests of every member of the dental team. You can find agenda details, housing options and online registration at www. yankeedental.com. Hinman Dental Meeting. The meeting, scheduled for March 22–24 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, serves as a comprehensive source of continuing education in dentistry. “We are excited about this year’s pro- gram and theme, which is ‘Experience Hinman: Invest in Your Future.’ It em- phasizes the importance of continuing dental education for everyone, from millennials just starting out to seasoned professionals looking to revitalize their practices,” said Dr. Patrick Yancey III, gen- eral chairman for Hinman 2018. “We’ve created a quality continuing education program delivered by many new speak- ers as well as some of the profession’s fa- vorites.” Hinman will feature nearly 260 cours- es, including 73 participation and inter- active courses covering topics that den- tal professionals can apply immediately. The meeting will feature more than 65 speakers — 20 new to Hinman — who will present the latest developments in the profession. “We are also thrilled to feature Dr. Om- alu as our keynote speaker this year. His story, which is chronicled in the hit film ‘Concussion’ (starring Will Smith), is one of incredible triumph in the face of seem- ingly insurmountable odds,” Yancey said. Born in 1968 in Eastern Nigeria during the civil war, Omalu lived with his family as refugees in a town that was under con- stant fire. Despite suffering war-related malnutrition in the first two years of his life, he attended medical school at age 15 and became a physician by age 21. In 2002, Omalu made a career break- through when he identified chronic brain damage as a major factor in the deaths of some professional athletes. He called the disease chronic traumatic en- cephalopathy (CTE), which he discovered as the result of an autopsy he performed on Mike Webster, the legendary Pitts- burgh Steeler and Hall of Famer who died at age 50. Within five years of reporting on Webster’s case, Omalu found CTE in eight more deceased NFL players, as well as in military veterans diagnosed with PTSD and professional wrestlers. But his findings were summarily dismissed — and even ridiculed — by professional peers, the NFL and the sports industry. Today, though, CTE is generally accept- ed and Omalu’s findings have revolution- ized neuroscience, sports medicine, the study of all types of brain trauma and the entire sports industry.
