World Dental Daily spoke with repre- sentatives of this year’s winning projects, Dr Guillermo Rivero, Pre- sident Confederación Odontológica de la República Ar- gentina [Argentina dental associa- tion], and Dr Matej Les košek, mem- ber of the executive board of Stomatološka [Slovenian dental association] and “Let’s Have Clean Teeth” coordinator. sekcija of the AD World Dental Daily: How do you feel about winning the FDI Smile Award? Dr Guillermo Rivero: This award represents a recognition of our work and current trajectory and provides a new stimulus to continue working to- wards a common objective. Dr Matej Leškosek: A profound sense of joy and pride took over for a while and then I started calling and e-mailing my colleagues and peers, who all contributed to the ini- tiative. What are the main features you would like to highlight about your winning projects? It functions in the different community spaces in addition to schools, such as child care centres, nurseries, maternity homes, and com- munity canteens and clubs, with oral health education actions that em- power people to take care of their oral health. Leskošek: By installing a sense of competition in kids, because we all know they enjoy competing, brushing teeth easily becomes a routine that later on is transformed into a neces- sary habit and daily need. As we say in Slovenia, “it goes in their blood”. Matej Leskošek: Sentí un profundo sentido de alegría y orgullo durante un tiempo y luego empecé a llamar y enviar correos electrónicos a mis colegas y compañeros de trabajo, todos los cuales contribuyeron. ¿Cuáles son las principales caracterís- ticas de su proyecto? Rivero: Nuestro programa escolar emplea un enfoque integral que involu- cra a niños, familias y a la comunidad en acciones de educación en salud. Access to oral health edu- cation is not avail- able in many parts of the country, a n d t h e p r i z e money will help us extend cover- age to the inacces- sible rural areas away from the big cities that are the most vulnerable regions of our na- tional territory. Caries Prevention Partnership Making prevention a priority Leskošek: With the FDI Smile Award opening more doors for us, we hope to involve the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia to even more vigorously support our project and help us in placing dental cabinets in every Slovenian classroom and thus make every child’s smile wider and brighter. El acceso a la educa- ción sobre salud oral no está disponible en muchas partes del país y el premio nos ayudará a extender la cobertura a zonas rurales inaccesibles lejos de las grandes ciudades, que son las regiones más desprotegidas de nuestro territorio nacional. Leskošek: El premio FDI Smile Award nos está abriendo más puertas, y esperamos involucrar al Ministerio de Salud y al Ministerio de Educación de la República de Eslovenia para que apoye más fuertemente nuestro proyecto y ayudarnos a colocar kits dentales en to- das las aulas de Eslovenia para hacer así las sonrisas más amplias y brillantes en cada niño.
