Kathryn Kell asume la presidencia de FDI del Dr. Patrick Hescot T he first highlight of this year’s FDI World Dental Congress took place yesterday evening at the impressive Palacio Municipal de Con- gresos de Madrid, when President- elect Dr Kathryn Kell took over the presidential chain of the FDI from outgoing President Dr Patrick Hescot during the congress’s welcome cere- mony. Kell, who is a dentist from Iowa in the US and a former trustee mem- ber of the American Dental Associa- tion, will lead the international dental body for the next two years. In addition to FDI executives, the ceremony was joined by a number of high-profile Spanish health officials, in- cluding Dr Óscar Castro Reino, presi- dent of the Spanish dental association, Dr Manuel Molina Muñoz from the Ma- drid regional government’s Ministry of Health and Dolors Montserrat from the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Ser- vices and Equality. A little bit of local co- lour was also added through an ener- gising flamenco demonstration, which gave everyone in the room the oppor- tunity to discover their own inner Span- iard. In conclusion, the traditional flag unfurling signified the embracing of the diversity of cultures and nationali- ties that come together at the FDI con- gress. the most successful international con- gress in the southern European country ever, with over 12,000 participants ex- pected to attend the extensive scien- tific programme and learn about the latest clinical techniques and products at the accompanying trade exhibition during the course of this week. Over 200 of the world’s largest dental manu- facturers and distributors have come to Madrid to showcase their latest offer- ings. This year marks the fourth time that the FDI’s flagship event has been held in the Spanish capital after the congresses in 1903, 1922 and 1978. The event, which is organised in part- nership with the Japan Dental Associ- ation and manufacturers Yoshida, GC, Morita and SHOFU, was the first op- portunity for officials and attendees to meet and mingle during the up- coming four congress days. With a “Kanpai!”, everybody finally toasted one other and enjoyed the rest of the evening. A pesar de las fuertes lluvias que azotaron la capital española el lunes, socios y amigos de la FDI se reunieron en el hotel InterContinen- tal en el corazón de Madrid para cele- brar la tradicional Noche de Japón. El evento, organizado en asociación con la Asociación Dental Japonesa y con los fabricantes Yoshida, GC Corporation, J. Morita y SHOFU, fue la primera oportu- nidad de reunirse para funcionarios y delegados antes de los cuatro días del congreso. En su discurso de bienvenida, el Dr. Kenro Hori, presidente de la Asociación Dental Japonesa, aprovechó la oportuni- dad para expresar su pésame por las vidas perdidas durante los atentados terroristas de Barcelona antes de dar las gracias a la FDI por su compromiso continuo con el evento. El presidente saliente de FDI, Patrick Hescot, agradeció y destacó los proyectos que la organización lleva a cabo con estas empresas, como la Asociación para la Sa- lud Oral de la Población Mayor (Oral Health for an Ageing Population Partnership), res- paldada por GC. “Me alegro de que esta no- che se haya vuelto un evento de larga tradi- ción de nuestro congreso”, declaró. Con un kanpai (brindis) todos final- mente se animaron y disfrutaron el resto de la noche. In his welcoming speech, Dr Kenro Hori, President of the Japan Dental As- sociation, took the opportunity to offer his condolences on the lives lost during the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and then thanked the FDI for its ongoing commitment to the event. Outgoing FDI President Dr Patrick Hescot also ex- pressed his appreciation and high- lighted the projects the FDI is conduct- ing with the companies present, such as the Oral Health for an Ageing Popula- tion Partnership, which is supported by GC. “I am glad that this night has be- www.world-dental-congress.org 1
