Since 2003, the Sunstar Founda- tion, together with leading interna- tional publications on dentistry and periodontics including the Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Clinical Peri- odontology, Journal of Periodontal Re- search and Journal of Dental Research has been promoting the “World Perio Research Award”. Scientists from dif- ferent countries present their re- search during this prestigious con- test, whose main focus is to promote new advances in oral health research and systemic diseases. “In 2003, when I was a young re- searcher, I had the honour of being the fi rst scientist to be awarded this prize. I now proudly display that tro- phy and the ceremony photo in my offi ce to ensure that my students are aware that good research can be in- ternationally recognised,” said the winner of the 1st World Perio Research Award, Professor Lior Shapira who en- couraged all the scientists in this area to apply for this award. The Sunstar Foundation will de- liver the 6th edition of the award event in 2018 under the EuroPerio9 frame- work, the international congress of periodontics. In addition, this year the Foundation will present an innovative initiative by adding a new award to its research project. In its quest to continue the task of scientifi c and social dissemination re- garding periodontal diseases and their impact on global health, in 2017 the Sunstar Foundation also launched | French start-up Innixim combines 50 years of know-how with innova- tion. Established by industry experts, including Sopro founder and former ACTEON Imaging CEO Pierre Montil- lot, and a new generation of extraor- dinary engineers, the company has taken radical steps to design the fu- ture of dental imaging to off er den- tists effi cient tools and provide bet- ter comfort for patients. The result of this philosophy is Spark, the fi rst per- sonal intraoral scanner, which is on display at the FDI World Dental Con- gress. Innixim has combined the bene- fi ts of diff erent scanning technolo- gies, but eliminated their weaknesses. To achieve this performance, the company used patented Line Stream Scanning technology, which avoids all of the problems experienced with common scanners. With dimensions of only 11.5 × 18.0 × 5.5 cm, Spark is very small, allowing the dentist to keep it at the workstation and remov- ing the need to share scanners. By far the fastest unit on the market, accord- ing to the company, it scans an imag- ing plate in only three seconds. More- over, Spark only requires dose expo- sures as low as 80 ms when using the company’s special high-defi nition im- aging plates. Moreover, it features outstanding image quality, providing a 35 LP/mm resolution. another important prize. The purpose of the Perio Link™ Award is to raise awareness of the relationship between oral health and general health, communicating scientists’ lat- est research on periodontics to the general public. Through this new award, the Foundation wants to com- municate the importance of considering the human body as a whole, as an organism whose functions are intercon- nected and impact on one an- other. In addition, the Founda- tion would like to ensure that this message reaches society at large, to also include it as a participant in the selection of the winners for this award. The scientifi c papers pre- sented at the 1st edition of the Perio Link™ Award will be available on the Sunstar Foun- dation website so that the public can choose the most interesting, playful or useful research they believe will encourage social awareness and discussion in these health areas. These two awards add to the many initiatives that Sunstar has been working on for more than 20 years. For this reason, the Foundation presents itself as a key driver of re- search and social outreach, with its purpose of making the public more aware of their health and the scien- tifi c activities that are currently being carried out. Innixim, France www.innixim.com Pavilion 5, Booth 5H18 www.world-dental-congress.org 19
