10 exhibitors 2017 ASM — May 5, 2017 From Shofu: Fluoride-releasing bioactive Giomer materials By Shofu Dental Staff  Developed by Shofu, Giomer is a collective term for bioactive materi- als that incorporate the company’s proprietary surface pre-reacted glass (S-PRG) technology. S-PRG fillers are obtained through the reaction of multifunctional fluoro- boro-alumino-silicate glass filler with polyacrylic acid in the presence of water. The resultant trilaminar struc- ture forms a stable glass-ionomer phase that allows for continuous release and recharge of fluoride and other beneficial ions (sodium, stron- tium, aluminum, silicate and boron) while protecting the glass core from water sorption and degradation. Clinically proven benefits of Giomer materials Giomer materials combine biological effectiveness of glass ionomer (release and recharge of fluoride and other beneficial ions along with the ability to inhibit plaque growth and neu- tralize acid) with superior physical, mechanical and esthetic properties intrinsic to nano-hybrid materials. Giomers have also been clinically proven in a series of long-term clinical trials. An eight-year clinical research published in JADA, 2007, recorded 100 percent retention rate with intact esthetics and no secondary caries, failures nor post-operative sensitiv- ity. Furthermore, a 13-year recall study presented at the IADR 2013 poster session demonstrated 66 per- cent retention rate with no secondary caries in 96 percent of restorations. Shofu has successfully incor- porated Giomer technology into a versatile line of products featuring nano-hybrid composites (packable, injectable, flowable, bulks), cements, adhesive systems, sealant and light- cured varnish. Fluoride-releasing nano-hybrid composite Approved for all classes of restora- tion, Beautifil II is a universal nano- hybrid composite designed to deliver brilliant esthetics in long-lasting res- torations. The S-PRG particles present in Beautifil II are responsible for high levels of fluoride release and recharge making this material an excellent choice for patients with a high-caries index. Key characteristics of Beautifil II include: •Superb handling optimized for non-sticky consistency. •Ability to facilitate fast and easy finishing and polishing with long- lasting surface shine. •Outstanding chameleon-effect shade stability. •High level of radiopacity and nat- ural fluorescence. 5 Above, SEM images of plaque on restorative surface after 24 hours without brushing illustrate how SPR-G (Giomer) particles help diminish the formation of bacterial adherence and plaque. Below, Shofu incorporates Giomer technology into a versatile line of products with nano-hybrid composites, cements, adhesive systems, sealant and light-cured varnish. Fluoride-releasing injectable nano-hybrid composite The S-PRG fillers have also been incorporated into Beautifil Flow Plus, an all-in-one base, liner and final restorative, approved for all classes of restorations. Combining the ease of delivery unique to an injectable with the strength, durability and esthetics specific to a nano-hybrid, this univer- sal material is available in two viscos- ities — both with identical physical properties. The highly viscous F00 “Zero Flow” formulation allows for precise place- ment and stacking, while the F03 “Low Flow” viscosity handles more like a base and liner, allowing for just enough movement to comfortably manipulate the material. Both viscosities demonstrate self- leveling attributes that successfully aid in achieving highly esthetic fin- ishing and polishing with fewer inter- mediary steps. The product’s features and benefits include: •Compressive strength and low wear similar to those of nano-hybrid composites. •Exceptional self-leveling and con- bubble-free sistency. •High radiopa- city that permits effective viewing of treated areas. •Sustained fluoride release and recharge proper- ties. •Resistance to bacterial colonization. Fluoride-releasing pit-and- fissure sealant formulated without phosphoric acid A BPA- and HEMA-free BeautiSealant is a pit-and-fissure sealant inclusive of Shofu’s proprietary Giomer tech- nology proven to inhibit plaque for- mation, neutralize acid, and release and recharge fluoride when treated with fluoridated household products (i.e. toothpaste, mouthwash). To facilitate strong and predict- able bonding BeautiSealant is for- mulated with mild yet effective adhesive monomers — carboxylic and phosphonic acid monomers. These monomers thoroughly penetrate and prepare pits and fissures but are gentler on the tooth than phosphoric acid which is known to dehydrate and demineralize the enamel. Exhibiting optimal handling, vis- cosity and bubble-free consistency, BeautiSealant is easy to apply in less than 30 seconds, an important factor when working with pediatric, geriat- ric and special-need patients. Chief product features focus on: •Formulation without BPA, HEMA and phosphoric acid. •Fast and simple application, in less than 30 seconds. •Optimal handling and viscosity with bubble-free consistency. •Inclusive of S-PRG particles proven to release and recharge fluor- ide, neutralize acid and inhibit plaque build-up. •Ideal application for pediatric, geriatric and special-need patients.
