M a t e r i a l s a n d m e t h o d s Electronic and manual literature searches were conducted bythree inde- pendentreviewerstoidentifymanuscriptsreportingdataonthedefinition ofperiimplantitiswithclinicaldiagnosis, writteninEnglishandpublished uptoOctober2015.Severaldatabaseswerereferenced,includingPubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library and the Grey Literature Database. R e s u l t s Forty-nine articles were considered suitable for the review. Current evi- dencesuggeststheuseofunequivocalcasedefinitionsforperiimplantitis, defined by changes in the level of crestal bone, presence of bleeding on probing and/or suppuration, with or without concomitant deepening of periimplantpockets.However,severalreferencepointswereusedtomea- sure these changes, including different levels of severity and years offol- low-up. C o n c l u s i o n The available scientific literature suggested an absence of a unanimous definition of periimplantitis. Future studies that apply consistent case definitions should be considered.
