Falcon, DDS, MDS, is the recipi- ent of the Foundation for Endodontics 2016 Endodontic Educator Fellowship Award. Designed to encourage a career in endodontic academics, the Educator Fel- lowship Award provides $250,000 over five years to individuals who commit to a minimum of five years of teaching. “Thanks to generous support from our sponsor, Edge Endo, the foundation is proud to award our flagship grant for 2016 to Dr. Falcon,” said Foundation for Endodontics President Dr. Peter A. Mor- gan. “Dr. Falcon has shown great commit- ment to the specialty of endodontics, and as an educator will instill in her students the critical thinking needed for success- ful endodontic diagnosis and treatment.” Falcon is entering her second year as an assistant professor in the Department of Endodontics at Rutgers, where she also completed her dental degree and end- odontic training. She applies her critical mind and bachelor’s degree in engineer- ing to endodontics regularly; she recog- nizes that understanding the biological rationale for endodontic treatment is as important as clinical expertise. “This is what excites me most about ed- ucation,” Falcon wrote in her fellowship Rutgers endodontic professor named 2016 foundation fellow application. “Fostering and developing the philosophy and methodology of end- odontic treatment that the students will take forward beyond graduation and that will continue to govern their endodontic therapy during their dental lifetime.” Falcon’s strong interest in teaching was evident throughout her education as she tutored in the campus writing center dur- ing her undergraduate years and worked as a clinical floor instructor in her resi- dency. As the Edge Endo Endodontic Edu- cator Fellow, Falcon will be able to balance her dream of a career in full-time aca- demics with the financial practicalities of her life. “Edge Endo is excited and humbled to know that Dr. Falcon was chosen as the 2016 recipient of the Foundation for End- Carla Y. Goodis, CEO of Edge Endo. “Dr. Falcon embodies the enthusi- asm that I felt, and still feel, in my end- odontic practice. We salute her in her on- going teaching efforts and look forward to a long relationship with the Founda- tion for Endodontic Educator Fellowship Awards.” Since its creation in 2001, the Founda- tion for Endodontics’ Endodontic Edu- cator Fellowship Award has recognized endodontic educators and the critical role they play in strengthening the specialty. A list of past recipients is available online, at www.aae.org/aae-foundation/funding/ fellowship-award-recipients.aspx. What have you learned most by taking these root canal photographs? As Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Where I sit today in my understanding of tooth clearing and diaphonization, I at first thought was never possible. It started as a simple question, then the development and realization of a goal. The process has been consistently evolving and delivering information and results ever since. Today, I see characteristics of the inter- nal anatomy of human teeth that I never thought possible or knew existed. Visual- izing the immense variability of human tooth anatomy has changed my clinical practices and improved my clinical re- sults, which benefits the patients I treat. Do you perform endodontic therapy your- self or do you typically refer cases out? I do all of my own endodontic treatments in my office. It has taken me years to identify the area of dentistry that I love. Perhaps one day I will take the necessary steps to specialize, but life is currently focused on my family and my children. Is there anything you would like to see changed about the way dentistry is prac- ticed today? Absolutely! More than you can imagine or can be covered in this session. In short, we need to work on our ethical standards within the profession itself and move back toward being true, real doctors over the business-focused patient treatment we are seeing overwhelm the practice en- vironment today. The actual care of the patient is always in competition with and in direct contrast to thebusinessandprofit.Wehavetogetback to patient-centered practices. The profits are there in mass quantities if we can just take the time to follow our roles as doctors. Doctor by definition means “to teach,” and proper teaching is not going to take place via advertising. Marketing is one aspect. Advertising is another. We have to start the movement toward patient-centered treat- CRAIG BARRINGTON received his DDS from the University of Texas Health Sci- ence Center San An- tonio in 1996 and is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
