For decades, dentists have relied on visual determination using a shade guide. In recent years, VITA Zahnfabrik has revolutionised this method through the introduc- tion of its VITA Easyshade digital measuring device. Worldental Daily spoke with Jürg Weber, Sales Man- ager for Central and Eastern Europe, about the development and value of modern shade communication. WDD: MrWeber, you have worked for VITA Zahnfabrik for 30 years. How have you experienced the techno- logical development from visual to digital shade communication? Jürg Weber: We were one of the first companies in the world to intro- duce electronic aid for shade determi- nation in 2004. Our electronics func- tion similar to a navigation system, giving the user the exact street, house number and direction of the target object. This is the principle of digital shade determination. Our VITA Easy- shade digital measuring device cap- tures the lightness, chroma and hue of a tooth. This is an important advan- tage for visual shade determination and contributes to precise shade de- termination and control too. VITA Easyshade has a brilliant colour dis- play, a precise and hygienically perfect sensor, and a long-lasting recharge- able battery. Since 2004, we have naturally been able to develop the system much fur- ther. We have put a great deal of work into ergonomics and design. Further- more, we have simplified the software so that only the information vital for shade determination is displayed. We have now integrated the American Dental Association’s whitening index and a whitening mode. Since 2015, VITA has offered the fifth generation with Bluetooth and our VITA mobile- Assist app. And by the way, VITA Easy- shade V is now perfectly suited for de- termining shade for CAD/CAM blocks. We are able to use the shade value not only for dental technology but also for chairside CAD/CAM restoration—an almost revolutionary step. Why are many dentists and dental technicians still more likely to use the shade guide? That is country-specific. In Russia and eastern Europe, dentists and den- tal technicians are further away from each other, and communication is usually via telephone or e-mail. Pa- tients generally go directly to the den- tist and not to the laboratory to have their prostheses individualised. In these regions, electronic shade deter- mination and communication are al- ready the norm. The situation is differ- ent in Switzerland or Germany, where a dentist can quickly send a patient to the laboratory. Laboratory technicians are normally masters of their craft and can precisely identify the shade. How- ever, most people’s eyesight and vi- sion naturally change over time. Even wearing glasses can distort shade de- termination. In the end, the result is the most important—and we achieve the best result with digital shade de- termination. Financial reasons too play a large role. The digital dental practice has been widely discussed for several years, but many dentists and dental techni- cians continue to rely on proven technologies and instruments. How can you convince these customers to use VITA Easyshade V? With every International Dental Show, FDI Congress and technology change, we have to adapt as a com- pany and representative of this indus- try. I have been with the company for 30 years now. If I had stopped innovat- ing ten or 15 years ago, I would no lon- ger be here today. Things that were not conceivable 30 or just five years ago are now a reality. Even the older generation has to get with the times and embrace new technologies. A dentist who has made the investment in a CAD/CAM system, but still uses classical templates for shade determination may lose orders in the long term. This is precisely the reason that a comparatively small in- vestment in VITA Easyshade V, in addi- tion to digital photography and classi- cal shade scaling, is advantageous. Pa- tients are enthusiastic about digital technologies and the simplicity of shade determination. Digital shade determination has never been this simple, reliable and comprehensive. Nasza cyfrowe urządzenie pomiarowe VITA Easyshade rejestruje jasność, nasycenie i odcień zęba. Jest to ważna zaleta w determinacji koloru,która pozwala dokładnie go kontrolować. Urządzenie VITA Easyshade jest wyposażone w zna- komity kolorowy wyświetlacz, precy- zyjny i idealnie higieniczny sensor oraz trwały akumulator. Dlaczego wielu stomatologów i tech- ników dentystycznych wciąż chętniej korzysta z kolornika manualnego? Zależy to od kraju. W Rosji i Europie Wschodniej stomatolodzy i technicy są od siebie bardziej oddaleni i komunika- cjamiedzynimiodbywasięzwykleprzez telefon lub pocztą elektroniczną. W celu dopasowania swoich protez pacjenci najczęściej udają się bezpośrednio do stomatologa a nie do laboratorium. W tych regionach elektroniczna determi- nacja i komunikacja koloru stała się już normą. Sytuacja jest inna w Szwajcarii czy Niemczech, gdzie stomatolog może szybko wysłać pacjenta do laborato- rium. Technicy laboratoryjni są zwykle mistrzami w swoim fachu i potrafią pre- cyzyjnie określić odcień. Wzrok i sposób widzenia większości osób w sposób na- turalny zmienia się jednak z czasem. Na- wet noszenie okularów może zaburzyć proces określania koloru. W końcu naj- ważniejszy jest wynik – a najlepsze wy- niki osiągamy w przypadku cyfrowej de- terminacji koloru. Dużą rolę odgrywają także powody finansowe. Metody cyfrowe w stomatologii są przedmiotem dyskusji od lat, ale wielu stomatologów i techników nadal po- lega na wcześniej sprawdzonych tech- nikach i instrumentach. Jak możemy przekonać tych klientów do używania VITA Easyshade V? Po każdej Międzynarodowej Wysta- wie Stomatologicznej, każdym Kongre- sie FDI i każdej zmianie technologicznej musimy przystosowywać się – jako firma i przedstawiciel branży. Mija teraz 30 lat mojej pracy w firmie VITA. Gdy- bym przestał wprowadzać innowacje dziesięć czy 15 lat temu, już by mnie tu niebyło.Rzeczy,któretrzydzieściczyna- wet pięć lat temu były niewyobrażalne, są obecnie rzeczywistością. Nawet starsze pokolenia muszą na- dążać za duchem czasu i opanowywać nowetechnologie.Stomatolog,któryza- inwestował w system CAD/CAM, ale wciąż używa klasycznych wzorników do określania koloru zębów może w dłuż- szej perspektywie tracić pacjentów. To właśnie z tego powodu stosunkowo nie- wielka inwestycja w VITA Easyshade V, jako uzupełnienie fotografii cyfrowej i klasycznej kolorników manualnych VITY jest korzystne. Pacjenci są entuzjastycz- nienastawienidotechnologiicyfrowych i prostoty określania odcieni. Cyfrowa determinacja koloru nigdy nie była taka prosta,rzetelna i kompleksowa. Dziękuję za wywiad.
