Owing to hormonal changes, preg- nant women are at higher risk of developing tooth decay and perio- dontal disease, which can also affect foetalhealth. Aimingtoenhancecareforpregnant women, the health ministry now al- lows for a free professional cleaning every 90 days, the Taipei Times has reported.Previously,regulationshad only provided one free tooth clean- ing, scaling service and newborn oral care health education for pregnant women. “An increase of the service will en- courage more women to get a den- tal cleaning during pregnancy,” said NHIA Medical Affairs Division offi- cial Chen Chen-hui. In Taiwan, only about 5,800 among 190,000 preg- nant women have a tooth cleaning doneeachyear,Chensaid. Owing to hormonal changes, preg- nant women have a higher risk of developing dental conditions, in- cluding gingivitis and periodontitis. Depending on the severity, this may be linked to pre-eclampsia, preterm birth and low birth weight of the child,researchhasshown.Inorderto avoid these risks, expecting mothers are advised to continue seeing their dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings, along with a twice-daily toothbrushing and flossing routine athome.
