Une œuvre sortie de l’ombre. Le musée d’ArtmodernedelaVilledeParisconsacre une exposition exceptionnelle à Andy Warhol, autour de sa série monumentale des Shadows. Réalisées en 1979, les Sha- dows sont le fruit d’une commande. Deux photographies abstraites d’ombres por- tées sont sérigraphiées sur des fonds peints au balai éponge, alternant 17 cou- leurs différentes. Présentée pour la pre- mière fois hors des Etats-Unis, cette instal- lation démesurée de plus de 700m² et 130m de long, la plus grande jamais réali- séeparAndyWarhol,constituelecœurde l’exposition. Ce chef-d’œuvre peu connu synthétise les questions qui traversent toute l’œuvre de l’artiste pop, de la répéti- tion et de l’occupation de l’espace. Out of the shadows. The Paris Museum of Modern Art has organized a special exhibi- tion devoted to Andy Warhol, based around his monumental series, Shadows. Made in 1979, the Shadows are the result of a com- mission. Two abstract photographs of shad- ows are printed on a background painted with a sponge mop, with 17 different colors. Presented for the first time outside the United States, this enormous installation thatisover700squaremeters,-and130me- ters long – Andy Warhol’s largest work is at theheartoftheexhibition.Thislittle-known masterpiece summarizes the issues that permeateallofthepopartist’swork,includ- ing repetition and the occupation of space. More importantly still, Alessandro Lanari, impre- sario of the rival theatre, had nothing better to offer him than “a German prima donna, a stuttering tenor, a buffo with the voice of a goat and a fairly useless French basso, but whom we must thank.“ Verdi’s music, his “vocal line sometimes brilliant, sometimes lively, sometimes colourful”, to quote the fawningly sycophantic critic of the Gazzetta diMilano,musthavehadamagicaleffecton hismediocresingers,ratherlikethatofDoc- tor Dulcamara’s famous elixir (in reality, a bottle of Bordeaux) on Nemorino! Or per- haps the cast were not really as bad as all that! Or were audiences immediately won over by that master alchemist’s mix of com- edy and poetry whose charm has never ceased to work, particularly in the tenor’s aria “una furtiva lagrima”. Besotted with AleksandraKurzak’sAdina,RobertoAlagna is performing one of his favourite roles for the first time in Paris in this production staged by Laurent Pelly.
