Dr. Olga Mielinkova Graduated in 2008 from the Dental Faculty in Moscow State University of Medicine and Den- tistry and in 2011 completed her Paedodontic Residency at Feder- al State Institute of Postgraduate Education, St. Petersburg. Now working as a paediatric dentist in Moscow in private practice. Since 2012, an opinion leader for Kerr and KaVo in paediatric dentistry. About the Author vouring substances or artificial colourants. Special rings can be used for the paste, with the aim of adapting the child and involv- ing him or her in the cleaning process; these go on the finger and are loaded with the paste. These rings are convenient for the dentist, as the paste is always at hand (Figs. 2 and 3). When there is mild plaque, it is very common for the gum margin to be strongly inflamed, so that even minimal contact causes bleeding. The gums are often traumatized by the bristles around the rotating brush used for cleaning and polishing the teeth (Fig. 4). The situation is made all the more difficult when Priestley plaque is present (Fig. 5) and the cleaning procedure can actually be more painful, generating a negative impression for both the child and the parents. A special rubber cup - Pro-Cup (Kerr) - provides the optimum solution when there are problems with high gum sensitivity, and is ideal for professional oral hygiene for children. The special composi- tion of the cup material prevents heating of the tooth. The cups do not contain latex, which de- creases the risk of allergy. Be- cause of its optimized shape, the edge of the cup accurately goes under the gum (Fig. 6), signifi- cantly decreasing the probability of traumatizing the mucosa and ensuring the absence of bleed- ing after cleaning (Figs. 7 and 8). This even allows a restoration to be performed at the same visit as teeth-cleaning. When combining it is planned prophylaxis and restorative pro- cedures in the same treatment, Cleanic Mint Fluoride-Free is recommended, as the use of fluoride-containing pastes prior to restorations has a negative impact on restoration quality be- cause of the chemical reaction between fluoride and adhesive systems. Furthermore, the low level of spattering of the paste provides additional conveni- ence for both the patient and the dentist. Pro-Cup Junior cups are recommended for professional prophylaxis for children, as these have a shorter handle than Pro-Cup standard size, and the use of light blue cups, which are softer than dark blue cups, re- duces the risk of dental trauma. Advantages of professional teeth cleaning and the use of materials from Kerr The use of materials and ac- cessories from Kerr takes the process of teeth-cleaning in chil- dren to a new level as it ensures high-quality results, patient comfort, and reduction of mate- rials costs. Correct initial preparation of both the child and his or her parents for the procedure, with detailed explanations of its stages and the materials used, as well as a description of the favorable effects of prophylac- tic cleaning on oral health have positive influences on patients’ attitudes to the dentist: parents become more confident in the dentist as a professional work- ing with children and caring not only for the short-term results, but also the long-term outcome. The ability to choose flavours of Cleanic paste (mint, green ap- ple or Light), the painlessness of the procedure due to use of Pro- Cups, and the reduced risk of allergy obtained by using latex- free Pro-Cup and Cleanic Light paste all increase patient com- fort during cleaning and avoid negative experiences associated with visiting the dentist. Furthermore, thanks to the suc- cessful experience of profes- sional cleaning of the child’s teeth, the parents then wish to undergo the procedure them- selves. Thus, the use of high- quality materials from Kerr ulti- mately improves patient loyalty such that they become regular clients, also recommending the dentist to their friends and rela- tives, providing a steady stream of new patients.
