It was loved by hygien- ists, assistants and orthodontists as an easy way to clean teeth without any flavoring agents, oils or fluorides. It was safe for those with the most common allergies and was easier to use than mixing pumice paste as needed. Preppies became an ideal product of choice for a variety of operatory procedures. Chlorhexidine was first used as a mouth rinse as an adjunct to con- ventional non-surgical periodontal therapy in Europe in the early 1970s. It received FDA approval in 1986. Chlorhexidine gluconate is an effec- tive bactericidal agent and broad- spectrum antimicrobial drug. Acting as an antiseptic, it is an effective bactericidal agent against all categories of microbes, including bacteria, yeast and viruses. Chlo- rhexidine is useful in many clinical disciplines, including periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery and opera- tive dentistry.1 After 20 years of use by the dental profession, chlorhexidine is recog- nized as the gold standard against which other anti-plaque and gingivi- tis agents are measured. Chlorhexi- dine’s anti-plaque effect is a result of the dicationic nature of the chlo- rhexidine molecule, which affords the agent the property of persistence ering a wide range of industry trends, practice management tactics and the latest office and clinical technology. “Each year at the Business of Dentistry Conference, oral health professionals rely on Henry Schein to deliver the tools and training that can take dental teams from good to great,” said Kevin Bunker, president, Henry Schein North America Dental Practice Solutions. “We are confident that this year’s conference will help oral health professionals boost pro- ductivity, operate efficient practices and provide high-quality care with innovative solutions and practice management software.” The conference agenda and course catalog features more than 70 classes on practice management and clinical skills. Bringing these two great concepts together, Preppies Plus, a pumice paste with chlorhexidine, was intro- duced by Whip Mix in 2014. Building on the foundation of the original Preppies, Preppies Plus packs a pow- erful punch in cleaning for dental professionals. Preppies Plus does not containfluorides,oils,oraddedflavor- ingagents.Itisalsoavailableinsingle unit dose cups. Two separate product evaluations were completed during the develop- ment of the formula for Preppies Plus. Thefirst, atastetest, wascompletedto determine if a flavoring agent should be added because of the somewhat bitter taste of chlorhexidine. Sixty percent of participants felt there was some to little taste of the mix but that the taste was not a deter- rent. None of the participants felt the taste lasted long after , and all sug- gested the product would be better without added flavoring agents. The second evaluation was com- ment; clinical procedures, technology andrecords;continuingcare;customer service;dentalteammanagement;Den- trix, tips, tricks and product updates; insurance; patient information; peri- odontalcharting;practiceanalysisand security; practice marketing; profit- ability,schedulingandtreatmentplan- ning and case acceptance. The event pleted on the consistency of the formula. All participants reported the paste was creamier than normal, did not have splatter issues and they liked the softer consistency. When asked what they thought of the product concept, one general den- tist wrote: “Awesome idea. I am sur- prised it isn’t on the market already.” Starting with the strength of the Preppies pumice paste, and adding the power of chlorhexidine, known as the “gold standard” for antiplaque will also include pre-conference train- ing courses, including Henry Schein Financial Services’ “Entrepreneurship in Dentistry” program, as well as Den- trix Practice Advisor assessments, “Streamlining Billing Processes with Dentrix eServices” and “Improving Patient Engagement with Dentrix eServices.” and gingivitis agents, Preppies Plus was developed. Clinical testing has not been performed to demonstrate the anti- microbial effectiveness of this prod- uct. References 1. Kaplowitz, Gary and Cortell, Marilyn.
