With the new 5x LED ring from W&H in the Synea Vision tur- bines it is now possible for the first time to achieve 100 % shadow-freeillumination,asthe preparation site is not only illu- minated from the mesial, but also from the buccal, distal and lingual/palatal sides at the same time. As the Scandette’s popularity grew, AEI changed its name to the Double Gracey Posterior and added three more instruments to the line. The new addi- tions include the Double Gracey Ante- rior, Double Gracey Mini Posterior and Double Gracey Mini Anterior. The Double GraceyAnteriorcom- bines a Gracey 1–2 and a Gracey 7–8. The Minis feature a shorter blade and longer shank, making them great for furcations. The dual cutting blade will also provide time savings to the office. The double edge allows the clinician to scale from mesial to distal tooth surface (or from buccal to lingual), without flipping the instrument or changing hand positions. Double Gracey instruments are only available in sharpen-free XP Technology, a patented surface engi- neering process that impregnates tita- nium nitride into a high-grade stain- less steel. The surface created by this process is said to be approximately 40xharderthanstainlesssteel,which means that the instrument’s blades willlastmuchlonger.Forthefirsttime in history, a clinician will be able to replace an instrument when it begins to dull, compared to when it has been sharpened beyond it’s original speci- fications. Since the clinician will no longer spend time sharpening, he or she can spend more time on revenue generating tasks, such as upselling procedures. In order to realise the full benefits of XP Technology, AEI recommends the clinician use a shaving or “ex- ploratory” scaling stroke. The clini- cian will find the modification in scal- ing technique will result in less hand fatigue at the end of the day and a lower risk for repetitive movement injuries (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome) over the her career. From reducing the number of in- struments, to the modified scaling technique and sharpen-free technol- ogy, dentists won’t want to go back to standard stainless steel instruments, the company said.
