_The process of accumulating patient in- formation to determine which course of dental implant treatment should be considered can be describedunderthecategoryofpre-surgicalpros- thetic planning. The first step in patient evalua- tion involves conventional periapical radiographs, panoramic radiographs, oral examination, and mounted, articulated study casts. These con- ventional tools allow the clinician to assess sev- eral important aspects of the patient’s anatomical presentation, including vertical dimension of oc- clusion, lip support, pho- netics, smile line, overjet, overbite, and ridge con- tours, and to obtain a ba- sic understanding of the underlying bone struc- tures. The accumulation of preliminary data af- forded by conventional diagnostics provides the foundation for preparing a course of treatment for the patient.
