Challenged by a difficult tooth dis- colourationcase,DrKoldfromHerning inDenmarkhadtheopportunitytocom- pare the new TRIOS Shade Measure- ment to a conventional method. In WorldentalDaily,herevealstheresults and discusses the potential of the fea- tureforclinicalpractice. IDrKold,youwereoneofthefirsttotrial the new TRIOS Shade Measurement. Howdidyoutestthenewfeature? Quite coincidentally, at about the sametimeIwasaskedtotryoutthenew TRIOS, I was met with a case that was quite demanding in terms of matching the shades. A young male patient, with otherwise perfect teeth, had a notice- ably discoloured central incisor that he wishedtohavereplaced. Thefactthatthecaseinvolvedasin- gleanteriortoothposedachallengewith regard to perfect shade matching to the existing teeth.Therefore, it was just the rightkindofcasebywhichtotestthenew digital shade measurement method by TRIOS. I worked with my laboratory to create two new crowns for the same treatment, and then compared their ap- pearance in the patient’s mouth. One crownwascreatedusingaconventional method, during which the shades were matched manually and sent together with photographs of the patient to the laboratory.Theothercrownwascreated using the 3Shape TRIOS Shade Meas- urementandHDPhotosfeatures. IWhat is your evaluation of the Shade Measurementfeature? Shade measurement could not be easier,becauseeverythinghappensau- tomatically while scanning. All of the shadesarestoredintheimpressionand one can display the shade values in the mostsignificanttoothareasuponselec- tion. The HD Photos feature is similarly easytouse.Onejusthastopositionthe scannertipandcapturethephotograph. Inthiscase,Iconductedapre-prepa- rationscanandtookanarrayofhigh-def- inition (HD) photographs to show aes- theticdetails.Afterpreparingthetooth, I only needed to rescan over the prepa- ration area, as TRIOS automatically mergesnewscanswiththepreviouspre- preparation scan, which saves a great dealoftimeintheprocess.Atthisstage, IalsotookadditionalHDphotographsto determinethemarginarea. IHowdidtheresultscompare? Iamgratefultoworkwithagreatlab- oratory and I have always been im- pressedbytheirabilitytoproducecrowns with well-matched shades. Therefore, I was quite eager to see how the crown based on TRIOS Shade Measurement would fare against an equivalent crown shadedusingaconventionalmethod. Although both crowns on the model and in the patient’s mouth looked fan- tastic,Inoticedveryslightunintentional shadowingonthecrownmatchedusing the conventional method during very close inspection and under optimal lighting. In this particular case, TRIOS was the winner, even though the differ- ence was marginal. In order to double- check our findings, we ran a similar test with another patient shortly afterwards andobtainedasimilaroutcome. I With this in mind, would you recom- mend TRIOS Shade Measurement and forwhom? Firstofall,itissatisfyingtoknowthat I am equipped with a shade measure- ment solution that saves me an abun- dance of time and allows me to achieve results that are at least as good as the slower and less handy conventional method. ThegreatthingaboutthenewTRIOS is that the Shade Measurement and HD Photos features allow me to easily con- vey so much more information along withtheinformationfromthedigitalim- pression.Inourclinic,wehavebeentak- ingalmostallofourimpressionsdigitally and the effects on our business have beenenormous.Thedirection3Shapeis taking by adding other functionalities thatcanbeperformedwhilescanningis simplytakingdigitaldentistrytoawhole newlevel. Theen- tire dental team, even in multi-specialty practices, will benefit from it,” Loke told Worldental Daily in GreaterNoida. Prior to its premiere here at FDI 2014, the cam- erahasbeenshowcasedat large dental meetings in the US, China and Singapore. But now it is here, in In- dia, that the EyeSpecial C-II was pre- sented to a large community of South Asian dental professionals for the first time. “WebelievethatFDI2014isthemost suitableeventinIndiatolaunchtheEye- Special C-II as it will give this unique product regional exposure in South Asia,”explainedLoke. He said that further development into shade taking and restorative simu- lating functions is anticipated for the camerainthefuture.
