science & practice 13AEEDC Dubai 2014 Digital technologies are univer- sallypresentinalmosteveryaspect of our lives. In dentistry, they have provided us with powerful tools for diagnosis, treatment planning and communication. As computers are becoming an essential part of state- of-the-art patient care, clinicians muststayuptodatewiththisrapidly developingfieldinordertomakein- formed choices in their use of tech- nology. When applied effectively, clini- cal software can help to improve ef- ficiencyandpatientsatisfactiontoa large degree. Digital photography, high-definition video and advanced presentation software, for example, allowustodesignavirtualaesthetic treatment plan. With the Internet, there is the possibility of sharing and reproducing any design with any device that runs the same soft- ware.Moreover,theever-increasing storagecapacityinthisvirtualworld allows access to information from anywherearoundtheclockthrough Internet-capable devices, such as laptops and tablet computers. Com- municationandconnectivityarethe new cornerstones of modern dental practice. Twoofthemostimportantcontri- butionsfromthedigitalfieldforden- tistry are clearly CAD/CAM and CBCT,whichallowsa3-Dviewofthe treatmentsite.Thisprovidesgreater accuracy in implant planning for greaterpredictabilityandsuccessof thetreatmentoutcome, forexample. Thetwotechnologiescombinedalso allow the fabrication of custom- madesurgicalstents,whichgivecli- nicians better control in placing im- plantsinaprosthodonticallydriven way. Cliniciansmustbecautious,how- ever, when designing a treatment plan,asanincreasingnumberofpa- tients are demanding minimally in- vasive dental procedures. The com- mon denominator here is tissue preservation. In this regard, digital technologieshelptoenhancenon-in- vasiveorflaplesssurgeries. Virtual planning procedures have become more intuitive with guidedsurgerysoftware.Twoofthe requisites of such software are user friendliness and evaluation of the precision of both surgical and pros- thetic components, thus achieving prosthodontically driven implant treatment. In addition, such soft- wareallowssharingoftheplanning informationamongthedentalteam, which facilitates the decision-mak- ing process. The advantage of being abletopresentthetreatmentplanto patients on a large screen makes it an excellent tool for presenting one- selfasamoderndentist. Despite the new treatment possi- bilities that come with digital tech- nology, however, important scien- tific criteria must still be taken into account when creating a virtual treatment plan in order to avoid pit- falls during the execution of the prosthodonticorsurgicaldentalpro- cedures.Therefore,atreatmentpro- tocolthatcombinesdigitalandtradi- tionalconceptsisrecommended.
