business28 Show Preview IDS Cologne 2009 At IDS 2009 Mectron will present the new third genera- tion Piezosurgery as well as new instruments for implant site preparation with Piezo- surgery. The latest, and maybe most important exam- ple of Mectron’s innovative power is based on the work of Professor Tomaso Vercellotti, a specialised dentist and brother of one of Mectron’s founders, who had been un- happy for quite some time withthelevelofprecisionand safety offered by the cur- rently available intra-opera- tive instruments in dental bone surgery. To overcome the problem, Vercelotti and Mectron had been working to- gether on the idea since 1997 to adapt piezo-electric tech- nology to bone surgery appli- cations. The cooperation be- tween the clinician and engi- neers resulted in the concept of modulating the basic ultrasonic vi- bration with a sec- ond, low-frequency vibration (which is adapted to the bone quality) that per- mits to cut bone effi- ciently and without overheating. Clini- cal trials showed that the micromet- ric cut of Piezo- surgery allows un- surpassed precision in dental surgery while preserving surroundingsofttis- sues. It also keeps the intra-operative field almost free from blood. The first genera- tion of Piezosurgery was marketed back in 2001. Today, thou- sands of specialised dentists and oral surgeons use this revolutionary tech- nique and make the company by far a worldwide leader in ultrasonic bone sur- gery. When Mectron decided in the 80’s to go for ultrasonic units (used at that time above all for supragingival scal- ing), the so-called magnetostrictive technology which was then gold stan- dard and still is in many markets, was never considered to be used. The com- pany rather chose the state-of-the-art piezo-electric tech- nology and tried to improve it to make it completely reli- able. One of the critical points was the mechanical stress on the ultrasound-generating transducer in the handpiece, and Mectron was the first manufacturer to introduce transducers made in tita- nium. It was later adapted by many of Mectron’s competi- tors. Mectron’s technological contribution to the field of light curing was possibly even more decisive. The com- pany had already been lead- ing in the field of conven- tional halogen lights before it came out with the world’s firstcuringlightbasedonLED technology. Cordless, power- ful and lightweight curing handpieces with an addi- tional long life-span have rev- olutionised the polymeriza- tion habits in many dental of- fices so that it can be consid- ered today’s standard. Mectron Medical Technolo- gies is based on the Ligurian Coast, almost on the seafront and only half an hour in the south of Genoa, Italy. It was founded over 25 years ago by engineers Fernando Bian- chetti and Domenico Vercel- lott who still are active own- ers of the company. Mectron exports to over 70 countries in the world. Almost 100 em- ployees in R&D, manufactur- ing and administration are contributing to this success story in the Carasco head- quarters. The new Natu- rale, which is in-line with the company’s mission to design and market products with dental profes- sionals’ health in mind, is the only Low Derma glove ap- proved by the US Federal Food andDrugAdministration, with low allergy and dermatitis potential due to the absence of accelerator chemicals, latex protein, and sulphur. Addi- tionally, the glove features im- proved stretch for more com- fort and good tensile proper- ties for maximum protection. According to the company, Naturale has passed chemo- therapy drug permeation, vi- ral penetration, and skin-sen- sitivity testing. Each pair of gloves is manufactured, exam- ined, and packaged with zero direct skin contact exposure —the ‘First Touch’ approach— to prevent potential cross-con- tamination at source. In an av- erage manufacturing process, a pair of gloves may be ex- posed to human skin up to eight times. Cranberry was founded in 1989 and is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year. Reaching across five major continents, its products have been recognised and accept- ed by dental professionals from countries that share the highest health and quality, the company says. Through the years, the company has been awarded many merits due to their quality and innovative products, such as the Dental Product Report product of 2004, Pres- tigiousTownieAwardof2008, and most of their products rated 4+ stars rating by the Dental Advisor. In addition, Cranberry USA has also suc- cessfully been the Top 5 Most Preferred Dental Gloves in the US for the last 20 years. (DTI/Cranberry) German EVE’s core busi- ness consists of a large num- ber of grinding and polish- ing instruments in various shapes, grain sizes and co- lours. At IDS 2009, the com- pany will showcase, among others, the new Diacera se- ries for grinding and high gloss polishing of oxide ce- ramics. EVE is a leading company in the production of rotating grindingandpolishinginstru- ments but their portfolio has been continually expanded over the past years. Today, the company also operates in many other application areas and markets, such as cosmet- ics and model making. Many of their products are med- ically classified. Back in the 1960s, Her- mann Vetter, grandson of the company founder Ernst Vetter, developed new tech- nologies for producing ro- tating polishing instruments for the dental and jewellery industries. A milestone for the company was achieved with the invention of the first diamond-bonded polish- ing instruments in the 1980s. Through it the company’s growth accelerated and at- tracted international aware- ness. Consistent material re- search and product innova- tion, as well as the develop- ment of new products for an ever-wider scope of applica- tions with surface treatment challenges, assure the com- pany’s leading position, com- pany officials said. Their ex- perience and expertise in the field of rotating grinding and polishing instruments have put them in a position to man- ufacture high quality tools for various markets and user groups at competitive prices.
