NEWS 48 I implants3_2013 TheAlliance for a Cavity-Free Future,an international group of experts that promotes an integrated clinical and public health effort, has announced a new Euro- peanchaptertobringtogetherexpertsindentistryand publichealthtocreateacollaborativefocusfortheim- plementationofkeychangestodentalhealthpractices acrossEurope.Oneofthealliance’stargetsistoenable everychildbornfrom2026tostaycavityfreeduringhis orherlifetime. The alliance, first launched as a global initiative in 2010, calls for joint action to challenge leaders and stakeholdersinthecommunitytolearntheimportance of caries as a disease continuum by recognising that cavities are preventable and that in the early stages caries is reversible, and to develop comprehensive programmes for the prevention and management of dental caries appropriate for individual regions. Find- ings from a new omnibus survey of 4,500 European adultsconductedonlinehavehighlightedtheneedfor furthereducationaboutdentalcariesatapublichealth level.According to 2013 figures from theWHO,dental caries affects up to 80 per cent of the world’s popula- tion. European countries have seen a marked im- provement in levels of dental caries over the last 30 years; however, in many segments of the population, dentalcariesremainsasignificantburden,astudyre- vealedin2008.Atagloballevel,theAllianceforaCav- ity-FreeFuturehassetthreelong-termgoals.First,by 2015,90percentofdentalschoolsanddentalassoci- ations should have embraced and promoted the new approach of caries as a continuum to improve dental cariespreventionandmanagement.Second,by2020, regionalmembersoftheAllianceforaCavity-FreeFu- ture should have developed and implemented inte- grated,locallyappropriate,comprehensivecariespre- vention and management systems and monitoring. Third, every child born from 2026 should stay cavity freeduringhisorherlifetime. European experts unite to Stop caries FOR is an independent, international initiative that unites professionals from various disciplines to im- proveoralhealthcareandsupporthumanitarianlead- ership.Youngparticipantscanbene- fit from personal mentorship and supportinadvancingtheircareersas emergingleaders.Themissionofthe new foundation is to achieve effec- tive worldwide patient care through scholarship and humanitarian engagement.The foundation has three networkkeyareas:Science,EducationandHumanity. “FORSCIENCE”helpsparticipantsstayattheforefront ofinnovationandscientificbreakthroughsbycollabo- ratingwithleadingexpertsandresearchersfromvar- ious fields. Additionally, a FOR participant becomes partofaleadingscience-andevidence-basedorgan- izationatthefrontiersoforalrehabilitation. “FOR EDUCATION” provides an interactive learning platform;itaimstouniteaglobalcommunityofexperts to provide clinical fellowship,mentorship,and mutual supporttoimprovethequalityoflifeofpatients.Young professionals can interact with mentors and peers for personal and professional development and life-long learning. “FOR HUMANITY” rec- ognizes humanitarian achievement and initia- tives.They ensure support for humanitarian projects and provision of free products for treating patients in need.FOR welcomes active participation from all dis- ciplinesandspecialtiesinthefieldoforalrehabilitation.
