Dental Tribune Middle East & Africa Edition

10 Dental Tribune Middle East & Africa Edition | July - August 2013ORTHO TRIBUNE J eddah, Saudi Arabia: The eyes were centered on interviewing remarkable notable professors in the field of Ortho- dontics, but we are heading also to shift ing the focus by unfolding the potentials of youth. Fostering their enthusiasm and cur- rent achievements must be our priority. Their booming activi- ties do not always reflect their proper dynamics. To understand this, we have to do more than scratching the surface, we need to look at what the younger generation thinks and un- derstand how much we can get them scientifically and practically engaged. I have the honor to introduce to you the students of the Jeddah Associati- on of Dental Elite Students (JADES). It is a dental student community, which focuses on training each other to become the leading dental practi- tioners of the future oral health ser- vices. JADES is a study group that started at Batarji Medical College in 2009 aiming at creating an atmosphe- re of students helping each other in order to improve themselves through their academic years. It is not as in a „get out of debt“ job but as there‘s a good chance for those young students landing a new association. The young feel that this is the time to invest in them and listen to their needs. This group has huge potentials and strong aspirations, which can definitely con- tribute to bolstering their future by trying to be a voice rather than just an echo. Seeding this spirit is our fuel to build up their enthusiasm and deter- mination. They have many triumphs in communicating with each other with the greatest of ease. It‘s a golden opportunity for some of the brightest young minds to join the workforce. Assisting teams to work in an atmos- phere of creativity, resourcefulness and optimism fosters high morale, providing them with the highest le- vel of attainable utilizing methods to best serve them. We are shooting at encouraging talents on all levels to innovate new ideas. This is one of the key influences in our mission. Convince me that you can adapt to a wide variety of people, situations and environ- ments. Yes we can adapt because it’s the atti- tude and enthusiasm that works mo- reover, plus our club is a hard working society we already worked with kids of 3-5 years old which was hard but with the kids we acted like kids and they were extremely happy from their first dental visit which we arranged, its about the situation that we need to adapt to change the attitude accor- ding to the situation is our style. Describe the most significant or creative presentation that you have had to com- plete. It was the first presentation when we were starting JADES 4 years ago because we had to give the best im- pression to the College Dean, staff and because as they say that “First Impression is the last Impression” in that presentation we had to set the rules for the students also we had to show our goals to the whole college, also there were sponsors so we had to show our worth to them, it was an outstanding task. Give an example of how you applied knowledge from previous course- work to a project in another class. It was dental community we applied so much of its knowledge in making charts, dmf indexes when we did the check ups, plus surveys, also all the dental subjects were the base of our community service work. Also in our videos medical subjects were integral part. Describe a situation where others you were working with on a project disagreed with your ideas. What did you do? It happens quite a lot when people dis- agree but the main target for our club is to achieve the MAIN GOAL as long as it is not affected health debates are quite helpful as Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him also used to take opinions from others, also convincing someone is a hard thing but we kept calm and tried to concentrate on the main target and being practical then to get involved in talk. Describe a situation in which you found that your results were not up to your pro- fessor or supervisor’s expectations. What happened? What action did you take? It happened and we changed our schedule totally and tried to give more time on that subject from the same day and it always shows better results. What was the most complex assign- ment you have had? What was your role? The most complex assignment I had was to arrange a meeting in KAUST, it was earth day and we had to arrange check ups plus plays for the kids also planting for the elderly, all the organization was by us. Compare and contrast the times when you did work which were above the standard with times your work was below the standard. We made the first dental student ma- gazine which is the first ever student magazine made in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and we put on a lot of effort and below standard was once a meeting we did for the club it was near to the exams and we had to do the meeting at the same time we were exhausted from the exams so that’s why it wasn’t as appealing as it should have been. How have you differed from your profes- sors in evaluating your per- formance? How did you handle the situation? We never differed in evaluation with the professors because always we work out the thing with the Profes- sors and that’s how things have been passed till now. Describe some projects or ideas (not necessarily your own) that were implemented, or carried out suc- cessfully primarily because of your efforts. It was the Gulf week of oral health which was asked by our dean to do community service in Arab Mall and we did took control of all the work and did above thousand dental check ups and tried our best to create awareness in people about their oral hygiene. Talk to me about a situation that required a number of things to be done at the same time. How did you handle it? What was the result? It was last year when I was working on the project for the earth day plus I had the sur- gery week of dentistry at the same time our magazine was about to be scheduled to release and we were having quizzes at that time, what we did was that we gave all our time in these thing and we compro- mise totally with our sleep and social life was gone. Give an example of when you had to work with someone who was dif- ficult to get along with. Why was this person difficult? How did you handle that person? It was our high profile person in the col- lege we had to deal with him and he used to take everything somehow in a negative way, so everytime we used to meet him we used to choose specific words before talk- ing to him to avoid any kind of misunder- stan- ding. Give me a specific example of so- mething you did that helped build enthusiasm in others? Our club is one of the example and every meeting we have a section for 5minutes in which we talk about la- test thing in dentistry to build and motivate the dental students to get more knowledge, One of the most important target of our club is to mo- tivate the students to do PhDs and study as much as possible. Tell me about a difficult situation when it was desirable for you to keep a positive attitude. What did you do? We always try to show the people best attitude specially if its public dealing because we are representing ourselves as dentists, it was once when were giving public lecture on oral hygiene and one urban guy was against our idea and his thinking was that peop- le catch caries like that and brushing teeth is just a way to make money, we tried to talk to him but in the end ignoring him was the best option we had because we didn’t wanted to was- te our time on con- Give me an example of a time you had to persuade other people to take action. Were you successful? It was when we started the club and we wanted the students to do pre- sentations in the meeting and public lectures, our idea was to copy the idea of symposium and ap- ply that with dental students and we are successful from the last three years. Describe a specific problem you solved for your professor. How did you approach the problem? What role did others play? What was the outcome? We always try to help as many thing possible for our Professors without thinking the outcome about it, always our role with new professor is to in- troduce to the staff and to give him the college briefing, the outcome is always that Professors appreciate our work. Was there a time when you put your needs aside to help a colleague un- derstand a task? How did you assist him or her? What was the result? A)it was when there was German exam called Physikum a lot of stu- dents failed so the good ones passed and then we tried to help the failed one , we tried to give them short cour- ses and explain to them the important stuff according to out experience from the exam , it was a difficult task and it was time consuming a lot but we set aside our benefits and helped them students. It can sometimes be difficult to find just the right words to express our ap- prection for those prominent distin- guished students for their persever- ance, challenge and success. The most glorious moments in our lives are not just the so-called days of success but rather those days when challenge ri- ses in you with a promise of future accomplishments. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them to the impossib- le. Difficulties strengthen the minds and being challenged is inevitable but our very survival depends on our ability to stand strong and adjust to new ideas and face change. The gem cannot be polished without friction nor the man perfected without trials. I would like you to always remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. It is our main target to take these innovated seeds and strengthen them with words of en- couragement and appreciation thus helping them succeeds in the world‘s rapidly evolving fields. The well- prepared and motivated youth can perform effective processes and our target should be consistent with this burning desire by creating sustainable opportunities for the welfare of our dental practices.
