5International NewsDental Tribune South African Edition - June 2013 Held at the Tokyo International Forum from 24 – 26th May, the 9th World Endodontic Congress attracted almost 1500 delegates from 41 member and non-member countries. Almost 300 research papers were presented with nine symposia and 17 table clinic presentations, where the newest scientific methods and technologies were displayed. The South African Endodontic Society was represented by Prof Peet van der Vyver (President), and Drs Heath Mark (secretary), Allan Deutsch, Boela van der Merwe and Heinrich Dippenaar. The 3-day congress featured plenary and keynote lectures presented by leading international speakers from all over the world, including Prof Peet van der Vyver. His lecture, ‘Clinical Management of blocked/calcified root canal systems – Materials and techniques’ was well attended and well received. Lecture topics included regeneration of the dental pulp, re- and auto-transplantation of teeth, biofilms in endodontics, treatment outcomes, and retreatment. Among the speakers familiar to South African audiences were Dr Cliff Ruddle, Dr Dan Fischer, Prof Paul V Abbott, Dr Martin Levin and Dr Arnaldo Castelucci. The World Endodontic Congress is a gathering of all IFEA member countries to exchange views and ideas on all matters pertaining to endodontics. The Endodontic Society of South Africa, in conjunction with Nomads, as hosts for the 10th World Endodontic Congress in 2016, presented all delegates with a typically South African memento - a bead and wire animal on a key-ring - to the delight of everyone. The keyrings were worn on the name tags and became the unofficial ‘pre-registration’ for the next WEC. Sunday 26th was a much anticpated day, when the host country for the 12th WEC in 2019 was announced. India was selected with Chennai being the host city. The SIMROID realistically simulates the behavior and reactions of a patient and can communicate with students and dentists in Japanese and English. Both dental treatment and appropriate communication skills can be learned using the robot under almost real conditions. The practice units are monitored and recorded by two cameras and a computer that can also control the “patient’s” reaction. SIMROID is an ideal addition for dental training and represents the possible next generation training model.
