The congress’ central topics were the opportunities andrisksofaesthetic,surgicalandprostheticimplan- tology as well as dental CT, anaesthesiology and ENT. In addition, clinical cases and failure cases were pre- sented. While Dr Vollmer reported on the latest re- search with regard to heat development during im- plant site preparation, Dr Valentin introduced a new technique of harvesting autogenous bone. Partici- pantswerealsoveryinterestedinahands-onseminar on pig jaws, in which nerve transpositioning tech- niques were practiced. The course was led by Prof. Dr Tamimi, who gave a theoretical introduction to the topic and demonstrated a step-by-step procedure supported by video transmission. The contents of those lectures held the key to a successful operation and a final implant stage. They also gave us the latest technology and knowledge of dental implantology. Duringthepost-discussionsession,theaudiencewas asked to contribute questions and suggestions. Lec- tures for hygienists and dental technicians were held intheothercongressrooms.Forexample,DrEzakiex- plainedtheopportunitiesofriskmanagementtoaux- iliaries in a special session. The Japanese colleagues were especially inter- ested in utilising the DGZI’s vast experience and in adoptingitssuccessfuleducationaldesign.Thisisex- emplifiedbyProf.Hayashi’sgoalofimplementingthe first implantology curriculum in Japan at a private university in Yokohama. At present, this type of post- graduateeducationhasnotbeenofferedanywherein Japan. Meanwhile, however, the Japanese ISOI mem- bers have acknowledged the potential of improving implantological treatment by rigorous professional training, consequently raising standards signifi- cantly. AllattendeesoftheISOIconferenceinJapanwere met with warm hospitality, and there was an exceed- ingly positive attitude towards DGZI, which bodes wellforacontinuedsuccessfulcollaborationandsci- entific exchange in the future. At the subsequent so- cialgatheringandparty,participantsgaveusapaton thebackandapositivefeedbackforthequestionnaire of this meeting. Thesuccessofthismeetinghascontributedtoour goals and we look forward to the future of ISOI and DGZI.ThemanypositivereactionsfromISOImembers and the many things we have learned from the lec- tures were both delighting and encouraging. There- fore,theboardsofbothofthetwoassociationsagree thatthemeetinginJapanandthemeetingattheDGZI Congress in Germany should become recurring ele- ments in their calendars.
