AD When US manufacturer Aribex in- troduced the first handheld dental X-ray system in 2005, the aim was to create an inherently safe X-ray de- vicethatcouldbeheldduringra- diograph exposure. Two mod- els exist that are available to clinicians around the world (varies by jurisdiction). NOMAD Dental weighs 4kg and features a pistol- grip design, with recharge- able NiCd battery. It gener- ates sharp, clear images with digital sensors, conventional film, or phosphor plate systems. The next generation NOMAD Pro, available since 2008, weighs only 2.5kg and has a rechargeable Li-poly batteryinthehandle.Italsofeaturesa full-colour LCD user interface, preset exposure settings, and additional time-saving features in a sleek design. Each model is capable of taking hun- dreds of diagnostic-quality radi- ographs with a single charge. According to Aribex, the NOMAD allows the operator to remain chair- side with the patient during radiogra- phy. With the handheld X-ray system, not only can the operator stay in the room, they can also reassure anx- ious patients (including chil- dren). This makes the device a first choice for thetreatmentof special needs or sedated patients. It also shortens pro- cedure time and re- duces mistakes and retakes, the com- pany said. More than 30 independent eval- uations and scientific studies have concluded the Aribex systems are botheffectiveandsafe—madepossible by patented shielding on the X-ray source and the leaded acrylic backscatter shield on the collimator cone, whichprotectstheoperatorfrom reflected radiation. “The NOMAD has forever changed the way that dental radiography is performed,” said Dr Clark Turner, Aribex founder and CEO. “With over 10,000 units now cur- rently in use, it has be- come a staple in dental op- eratories everywhere.” ARIBEX, USA www.aribex.com Hall 11.3 Booth D079 NOMAD HANDHELD X-RAY business66 IDS 2013 – 13.
