The day-trip will allow spe- cialists on board to carry out dia- betes screening, provide exami- nations and consultations for di- abetic patients, and provide wider medical education to physicians, patients and nurses in the area to aid effective man- agement of the disease and also reduce the staggering rate of dia- betes in the local population. The Win Over Diabetes mo- bileclinicisalsofullyequippedto provide screenings to the resi- dents of Al Lusaily, which will in- volve blood glucose, blood pres- sure and lipid testing, together with the monitoring of other im- portant vital signs. Diabetes mellitus is the fourth leading cause of death by disease globally, and is the lead- ing cause of blindness and visual impairment among adults in de- veloped countries. According to the World Health Organization, the preva- lence of diabetes is highest among member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),rangingfrom11.5to30%, with more than 20% of the local population affected in the UAE. This makes diabetes manage- ment as the priority for all the stakeholders inUAE. The 'Win Over Diabetes' mo- bile clinic campaign intends to cover all seven UAE emirates over a 12-month period, with specialist health care practition- ers onboard making visits to the country's many hospitals, healthcare clinics, and commu- nity centres. Organizers of the 'Win Over Diabetes' Mobile Clinic cam- paign also point out that the mo- bile clinic tour is not only in- tended to screen UAE residents fordiabetesbutalsotooffertreat- mentandcareoptimizationinre- mote areas, including: • Diabetic patients also suffer- ing from complications such as hypoglycaemia • Weight gain in diabetic pa- tientsduetoalackofeffective management and even, in some cases, awareness of their illness • Patients with diabetes-asso- ciated illnesses such as high blood pressure (hyperten- sion) and abnormal levels of fats/cholesterol in the blood (dyslipidaemia) The Win Over Diabetes mo- bile clinic is a joint patient serv- ice initiative between the Emi- rates Diabetes Society and Swiss pharmaceutical company, No- vartis - one of the leading phar- maceutical companies world- wide, offering partnership in pa- tient-oriented services beyond the innovative medications across different therapeutic ar- eas.
