Due to leakage from X-ray tubes, scientists developed protocols to protect operators fromimminentX-rayexposureduringproce- dures. These protocols included some com- bination of lead-lined walls, lead vests and the operator leaving the room. Such steps remained intact through the end of the 20th century. Now things have changed. When Aribex, Inc. developed the first hand- held dental X-ray system in 2005, the com- pany created a device that was inherently safe—from the beginning. Today, clinicians can safely hold a lightweight cordless X-ray unit, called the NOMAD®, in their hands while taking radiographs. There are two NOMAD models, and avail- ability varies by country. The NOMAD Dental weighs less than 4 kg and features a re- chargeable NiCd battery. It produces sharp, clear images with digital sensors, tradition- al film, or phosphor plate systems. Either device can easily be employed in the officeandthentakentothehospital,nursing home, or any other required location. In the office environment, the NOMAD has taken the place of multiple wall-mounted X-rays, providing enhanced convenience and lower cost. Dr. Joseph Hidalgo of Plano Texas enjoys the value of the NOMAD . “When I built my office, I had to decide whether to use wall-mounted X-ray ma- chines or go with the Nomad Pro Handheld X-ray System. Now we are using the NO- MAD on a daily basis, I am very glad that we chose to use it. One NOMAD saved the money in construction costs when com- pared to the cost of multiple wall-mounted X-ray machines for a four-operatory solu- tion we have in our practice.” The NOMAD allows the dental technician to stay right next to the patient during the radiographic procedure. All that is required is to position the device and the receptor, and then take the X-ray. This saves time for the operator, shortens the time the patient has to sit still with film or a sensor in their mouth, and reduces retakes. The device is capable of taking hundreds of diagnostic- quality radiographs with a single charge. “Numerous studies have been done to en- sure that the NOMAD is indeed safe,” says Dr.LarryEmmott,DDS,consideredtobethe leading authority on dental high tech in the U.S.A. “In fact, one study actually showed NOMAD users received less exposure than those who used a traditional system.” This is made possible through Aribex’s pat- ented shielding on the X-ray source and col- limator cone, as well as the leaded acrylic backscatter shield that protects the opera- tor from reflected radiation. More than 30 independent and third-party evaluations and scientific studies, from universities, physicists, test houses, government and military groups have concluded the Aribex NOMAD Handheld X-ray Systems are both safe and effective. Because it is so easily transportable, the NOMAD has accompanied dental practitio- ners on countless humanitarian missions around the world, allowing dentists to prac- tice in remote areas where conventional X-ray devices could never go.
