Initiative Launches Action Toolkit andHealthImprovementCard FDIFocuseson Noncommunicable Diseases MEXICO CITY “ WorldOralHealthDay2011was celebrated this year on Sep- tember 12th under the theme of noncommunicable diseases” or NCDs, FDI World Dental Federation President Dr. Roberto Vianna said in the Mexican capital. Dr. Vianna spoke at a press conference organ- ized by the Mexican Dental Association prior to theFDIWorldDentalCongress,whichbeginsto- daySeptember14inMexicoCity.TheFDIpresi- dent led the pre-launch of the just-published ActionToolkit,developedbyFDIonbehalfofthe WorldHealthProfessionsAssociation(WHPA). The NCDs Action Toolkit is a practical tool that nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, den- tists and physicians should use when commu- nicating with patients and the public on NCDs on how their health can be improved through positivechangesinbehaviourandlifestyles.The Toolkitincludes: aHealthImprovementCard- a professional guide on using the Health Im-- provement Card and discussing its contents withpatientsandpublic; a guide to the Health Improvement Card for- patientsandpublic. ThelaunchoftheNCDActionToolkittookplace afewdaysbeforetheUnitedNationsSummiton NoncommunicableDiseases(NewYorkCity,19 and20September2011).FDIisdeterminedto ensurethat‘oraldiseases’arespecificallyrefer- encedintheSummitDeclaration. UN Declarations contain agreed principles to guidefuturepolicyandactions.Assuch,theyin- fluence international development aid and can have a significant impact on funding decisions. An example would be the decision to include a dentalmedicineunitinaprimaryhealthcarefa- cility,therebyintegratingoralhealthintoprimary healthcare. AFocusonPrevention ExplainingFDI’sinvolvementintheWHPAToolkit project, Dr. Vianna said that with limited funds availabletopayforexpensivetreatmentforthose sufferingfromNCDs,“theonlysolutionistotake preventivemeasures,”which,headded,waspre- ciselythepurposeoftheNCDActionToolkit. “Effective prevention means talking to patients and public about use of tobacco and alcohol, about healthy eating, about exercise. It means encouraging them to take a few simples tests, such as blood pressure and cholesterol. It means encouraging them into healthier life- stylesandbehaviors,”saidDr.Vianna. He was accompanied by FDI President-Elect Dr OrlandoMonteirodaSilva,whotoldtheassem- bled journalists that working with other health professionalsintheareaofNCDswillhelpinte- grate dental medicine into the field of general health and into World Health Oragnization NCD strategy.
